not being critical but i have always been a bit confused by these custom launchers. spotlight seems like just the right amount of simplicity to me. i dont think i'd want more random categories to potentially show up instead of what I want

@animeirl @Moon @karolat spotlight didn't always exist, and it didn't always default to putting applications at the top of the bar. most of the launchers (quicksilver, butler) hail from those times and people just keep using them.butler also does/did other shit, as did quicksilver, but i think the age of mac powerusers is somewhat gone

@mitchconner @Moon @animeirl @karolat > javascript:comfystare: if the word hate was written on every nanoangstrom...also the mac launchers do/did significantly more. since the workspace concept and api existed, they could use it to switch to open apps, quit them, call special functions those programs could expose through various meanselementary tried to bring back a fraction of this with the Contractor system

@animeirl @Moon i love the hardware, the software is just alright. with with some additions it's quite nice:1. maccy for a searchable clipboard manager2. istat menus to actually see hw utilization and temperatures3. bartender to hide unused app icons (necessary on notched macbooks, especially smaller ones like my 14 inch)4. raycast is a spotlight replacement for me, showing off window management with it. but i mostly use it to open/switch to apps and occasionally to interact with spotify (there's are many addons)

@karolat @Moon it's not new. This design has been around for like a decade, and the port on the bottom isn't the only stupid part about it.Hear me out here. The mouse has just one physical button and the entire top surface is a touchpad. The way it distinguishes between the left and the right click is solely based on there your fingers are on the mouse. Meaning, if you wanna make a right click, you have to lift your left finger off the mouse.

@Moon @karolat worked great on my decade-old mbp laptop that just croaked. i didn't consider getting a newer one cause i heard vaguely that it didn't work. and now with the M1 chips yea i guess it's a non-starter. i believe those are ARM chips and there is a fedora build for ARM now (planning to try it on my r pi)not to mention all the part serialization now and anti-repair stuff just pisses me off
