So um, #UK #Trans friends...I am considering entering a program based in Belfast because the amazing colleague who has really supported me is there, but I'm a bit anxious about going to a place technically under the dominion of TERF island. What are your impressions of the trans environment in Northern Ireland? How easy is HRT access through private/out of pocket means?I'd likely just be there for a shorter time (6 months maybe?) here and there, but not sure what the reality is in the ground.

@JoscelynTransient Hi, I'm a transmasc person who lives in the Republic in a small town just south of the border. I've been able to out myself left and right in daily life and I've felt safe doing it. (I'm from the US and people ask about my accent, and if the conversation goes a bit I tell them I moved because of the transphobic politics.) I once took a bus trip alone to the North to buy a rat cage and didn't have any trouble, people were just as friendly to me. When I visited the Titanic museum in Belfast it was the often-American tourists who made me nervous.I haven't been to non-tourist areas in Belfast yet, so unfortunately I can't really speak to that. I also realize that navigating the world as transmasc and as transfem can be kinda different experiences. In my town, I suspect I've been the one to tell a few people that trans men exist at all.

@legumancer if you do know any trans fems or meet any that share these kinds of experiences there, would love to hear from them too! I imagine that there are specific ways that being masc or fem or visibly non-binary all shape these things to mean some extra considerations that are helpful

@JoscelynTransient People in the Republic usually get HRT through GenderGP, a UK based company. By being in the UK you'll probably avoid the problem that a lot of people here have had with Republic of Ireland pharmacies often not being able to take electronic UK perscriptions. There are a few people in the North in the Ireland discord I'm in, want me to get you an invite?

@JoscelynTransient In the Republic, the waitlist for national gender care is said to be 3 years but is actually more like 9, so everyone goes private. I hear it's similar in the UK. In the Republic there's no way to get an HRT perscription transferred over if you move, they want to make you spend multiple appointments proving you're gendery enough first.I've hear Gender GP is informed consent and relatively quick. If you can get an extra month or two of your perscriptions to bring with you to give you time to get it sorted out, that's probably ideal. The other thing to be aware of is that if you come form the EU but not the Republic, you'll have to look into whether UK nationalized healthcare covers you for anything at all. The UK has a brexit-mitigating agreement with the Republic called the common travel area, but I don't think they've extended that to any other EU countries.

@JoscelynTransient Hi, I’m a Scot so I can’t speak to the specific situation in NI but in the UK HRT is prescription only, so you would need to register with a NI GP practice. If you already have a prescription from your own doctor the practice should issue repeat prescriptions as needed. If your course is run through a university they will probably have a heath centre for students who can give you more specific advice.

@LisaDiFalco1 thanks for the info! Yeah, it's the weirdness of NHS/private practice/gender clinic regulations that my eyes just go kinda swirly at 😵💫So that info is helpful! I wonder, have you heard about what it's been like for those transferring prescriptions from overseas? I guess I'm wondering if I have a prescription in the US, would a GP there just write repeats or would I have to go through all the hurdles of getting re-assessed/etc.

@JoscelynTransient You are a man and you will never be a woman. You are a mentally ill degenerate. Get mental help.
