Just found out yesterday that Peertube can also do live-streaming these days, and it works reasonably well with about 30s lag during streaming. That's kind of awesome. Even though I don't really do streaming.#peertube #foss #live #streaming

@boilingsteamIt's really good for streaming. You get to adjust the delay so you can choose how much load is handled by the swarm vs just your server.

@dave Forgot to mention it works seamlessly with OBS, which is also very nice

@boilingsteamIt's all round pretty good. It might take some experimenting if you're wanting to do live transcoding on low power hardware though. I think when I was working on my calendar plugin I just about managed the original stream +240p on raspberry pi 4.

@dave Yeah, it may be challenging if I stream anything remotely demanding from a laptop I guess

@boilingsteam you could have ~0sec of latency if you disable the P2P/torrent sharing on the video. You will have to send to every viewers the full bandwidth. Exemple : if you stream at 8Mbits/s and if you have 10 viewers, you server have to output constantly 80Mbits/s

@sxpert That was with the fastest mode (no P2P), with P2P it was about one minute delay or slightly more

@boilingsteam You can follow other instances without creating your own @peertube instance? This always bothered me that peertube seemed to be having all the servers as opt-in and not opt-out like Mastodon (Don’t get me wrong, it helps to clean a LOT of stuff you wouldn’t want (see @PeerTube_Isolation), but you weren’t able to discover a lot of stuff. And yeah, I know it’s ActivityPub compatible, I follow those with my Mastodon account now, but I prefer having a video subscription list for that.

@poorpocketsmcnewhold @peertube @PeerTube_Isolation following any account is not a problem as long as you are able to find content or a channel on a peertube instance. But searching for content is an unsolved problem for now.

@boilingsteam Surprising, but whatever; it should focus on that instead of videos, since it's still worse than ftp at that.

@boilingsteam @peertube I mean, I could search for a specific one on some bigger servers, or using the few opt-in search aggregator, It’s like Mastodon, and I’m fine with that by-design limitation. However, the issue is trying to follow a channel, from an external instance. If your instance haven’t whitelisted it, you can’t seem to be able to subscribe, and regardless if it wasn’t blacklisted. (mamot.fr haven’t specifically whitelisted mastodon.cloud for me to be able to see your posts and talk)
