Your occasional reminder that since 1988, just 100 companies have been responsible more than 70% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions - and more than half of global industrial emissions over this period can be traced just 25 corporate and state-owned entities, with ExxonMobil, Shell, Chevron and British Petroleum (BP) among the highest emitters. So by all means, recycle. Take cold showers or do whatever else makes you feel like you're playing your part. But let's not lose track of the fact that the whole concept of a "carbon footprint" originates from a 2004 marketing campaign for BP, one of the largest oil companies in the world. It was designed to individualize the problem of climate change, and keep us blaming each other rather than them.

@BarrenPlanet BP shifting blame in the name of profits since 2004. I like that this post doesn't take the argument too far and suggest that people don't have a part to play with our individual actions--we do. Instead you do a good job putting it in perspective to shift the focus, emphasis and onus to where we can do the most good.

@BarrenPlanet As long as our government allows big money to dictate policy this will be harder and harder to change.

@christianschwaegerl @highroads It's not as simple as that, unfortunately. Almost every area of manufacturing still depends on a continuous flow of cheap hydocarbons, and keeping that flow going depends on endless war, with the world's - and especially the United States' - military-industrial complexes being among the biggest emitters. The US military and military-linked industries *alone* emit approx. 336 million metric tons of CO2e per year. Climate change isn't your neighbour Chad's fault for driving an SUV - and nor is sensible, recycling Mary (model citizen!) doing a much better job with her electric car, which still involves environmentally destructive processes to produce.

@FantasticalEconomics Of course we all do have a part to play. This household recycles obsessively and does its research on where its food comes from and what production methods are involved. But individual efforts aren't enough, and without global, systemic change and concerted political pressure to bring about those changes - towards which we can all also play a part! - our planet will still be on a collision course with catastrophe.

@BarrenPlanet @highroads I didn‘t say that climate change or environmental destruction would be gone, I said BP would be broke. without customers. And the „corporate versus private“ responsibilty agenda isn‘t only pushed by corporate villains but also by groups which use climate change for spreading various unrelated economic ideologies. I‘d say it‘s not an alternative, every level of society bears some responsibility according to their CO2 emissions, ie very large for BP but >> 0 for „Mary“.

@BarrenPlanet @highroads And as CO2 is by far not the only metric of destruction, you can apply that to resource use for electric cars or to biodiversity impact (land requirements for food routines etc.), too. Once companies take responsibility, they need customers supporting that change and going along. Customers can also support change makers within coroorations. What doesn‘t work is companies/regulators deflecting responsibility to customers AND customers sticking to behavioural routines.

@christianschwaegerl @highroads The CO2e metric does include other greenhouse gases that have similar effects. The "e" means "equivalent".Are we even in the same discussion? What motivates you to nitpick over the destruction of your own species? What sort of sociopathology are we dealing with here?

@BarrenPlanet what are the other 75? Does that mean that 75% of that 70% is from privately owned entities? Who are they owned by?
