I actually like Twitter meta discussion. After all- Twitter was a huge part of my life for 16 years.- Mastodon is THE place where most of the sensible ex-Twitter users have joined. Why shouldn't we talk about Twitter? For me it's entertaining to watch the trash burn.If you don't agree, please filter out the word Twitter. We have an excellent filtering feature here on Mastodon. #Twitter

@rolle I am still there as several contacts for important companies (insurance, electricity etc) run their support through it.But yes, seeing it burn is entertaining. Like the news this morning, that non paying people's tweets will be even more limited in reach.

@henrik @rolle They have a support chat on their sites, with chat-bots that understand nothing. They also have support phone numbers, where you're always the 25th or more waiting in line.No contact forms, no email addresses.Yes, customer support has degraded to that.

@rolle Twitter was a large part of my digital life too; itâs really sad to see whatâs become of it. A small part of me wants to watch it burn and see that idjut fail hard, but the rest of me wants to focus on building a new, better place here.

@rolle @rmattila74 My words at 3am aren't always the best... what I really meant to say was that we can use the light from burning the past to help light our way forward. It's the hopeless optimist in me. đ đ„ đŠ

@rolle What many of you seem to be missing is that unlike Twitter, the onus is on YOU to be responsible for your toots. If you insist on talking ad nauseum about a topic, the tradition here is for you to CW the conversation. That way those of us who donât want to read it donât have to. We arenât triggered, we donât have to read a topic about which we donât care. The same with US Pol and Brexit and NSFW topics. It would take you a lot less time than writing this disclaimer: âI liked Twitter, Iâm here because the cool kids are, but Iâm still going to treat peeps the same way as on Twitter.âPS. Yes I know other people arenât doing it. They too are all from Twitter and apparently old traditions do not apply.

@lucywildboots If you don't care, please mute, filter, unfollow and block. It's easier that way when compared to convincing everyone to post what you want.

@rolle So if I want to be blessed with conversations with you the onus is on me to protect myself from your abuse? Yea, I can see why you did well on Twitter. How about you be courteous to those who came before you and follow their traditions. Unless you think youâre more special than one of the creators of the fediverse who does use CWs for this purpose.

@rolle @lucywildboots Sorry to pop in but as a Mastodon newbie coming from twitter I agree about the content warning - we should overall use it more, and I agree we should use it when mentioning twitter. There, let me add one! Why? Because some might be fed up hearing about it, or some might even have a hard time detaching from it. Personally after reading a post on twitter I feel the drive to... go and check twitter; yes itâs sad, but like using CWs for, say, alcohol, or some overpresent topic, I think we should use them for twitter as well.Of course people can mute /block etc. but I agree that it is first the responsibility of the poster to be respectful of their audience, and CW are the perfect tool for this. :)

@rolle @lucywildboots This little exchange is entertaining and thought-provoking. Having joined #Mastodon way back in the âearly daysâ, when there were less than half as many users as there are now, (Nov 4, â22, the biggest day of the Twitter exodus, which looks like when Roni arrived as well). itâs obvious to me the early Fediverse culture (pre bird exodus) has been diluted and evolved considerably since then. Regardless, the overall atmosphere is far kinder and more civilized (due to the design, which imho is why the Fediverse is a game changer for society). I found myself following a few people who became annoying due to their tone and topics, so I cut them loose with no regrets.Whatâs nice here is that freedom of speech cuts both ways. Youâre free to say whatever you like, and I (and my instance admin, hey @seb) are free to choose not to listen, or tolerate your speech if itâs too offensive. The algorithms of #BigSocial force it down our throats.

@rolle completely agree. Itâs not that twitter started out bad. As a society we simply didnât know what the combination of the features and business models would do at the start. Then we started not listening to the experts, and Silicon Valley grew increasingly compenent at convincing themselves they were not affecting anything, but âthis is just how humanity has always beenâ.The business model ended up being the message, and here we return again to laissez-faire capitalismâs problems.
