mastodon could save us a metric ton of bullshit problems if they allowed people to join instances with a single handle.

That already exists. You’re already on my instance as @mattblaze. https://bofh.social/@mattblaze@federate.socialOr do you mean you want to be able to login go another instance with your credentials on @federate.social?

@gme @mattblaze that's federation. It just means that the instance allows integration across different instances. It doesn't mean a member of that instance can also be a member of another instance...just that their content is "permitted" to be read from that instance.

Well if we both agreed on an identity provider then you could be a member. But it’s helpful to remind folks that accounts on the fediverse are more akin to email addresses. It really wouldn’t make sense for my me@mydomain.com email account to also exist on my.account@protonmail.com.How would message delivery work?

@gme @mattblaze It's not really helpful, it just pisses people off, especially if they point out that integrating email UX has been a fait accompli for a decade.

It is extremely helpful to help people understand the concept of federation and message delivery (which all SMTP servers are).

seriously, you want screenwriting twitter? You want indie authors, you want creators? Let people treat instances like community groups instead of just propping up different sections of the platform. Federation isn't the same as membership or topicality...and no one is going to do the x1000 account switching thing. They just aren't. Stop.

I know who you are, Matt. I’ve been following your writing and your career for almost 20 years. That being said….It doesn’t make much sense for g311enburg@gmail.com to also be the same account as g.ellenburg@microsoft.com which, unless I misunderstood you, was what you were calling for here. That was my point. And the analogy of Email was for people who have no idea what the fediverse is or how it works. People already know what Email is though and understand that an account on Gmail is not the same as an account on Hotmail. Yet, someone on Gmail can very easily email someone on Hotmail.

@gme @victoriadecapua Again, I am aware of how email works. There are two pieces of advice I see given to prospective users:1. You should pick an instance according to your interests and community.2. It doesn't matter what instance you pick, because federation.Well, which is it?In fact, both are strictly true, but neither is the whole story.

Which -- ironically -- is not much different than someone choosing an email provider. Also, you forgot option 3:3. Run your own instance.

@gme @victoriadecapua It's more consequential than that. What instance you're on determines what you see in the local feed, and who sees your messages in their local feed. That's the part I (and others) would like to have more flexibility with. Please consider the possibility that people who have different preferences understand what they want.

@mattblaze @victoriadecapua Not really. The local feed is made up of the posts and boosts of the instances users. The network feed is based on all the remote users that the local users are subscribed to. There's nothing to stop any user from subscribing to any other user unless the remote instance is blocked.

@gme @mattblaze which means you have to follow the individual AND the instance has to be federated with their instance. So if some instance blocks mastodon.social, that person has to join your instance or another that is permitted. The bottom line - switching *instance views* or feeds is better UX/UI than switching accounts.

Nostr solved it too. We could bolt it onto AP easily by using ENS/ethereum wallets too.Tons of benefits from this approach especially by making it possible to *pay* people by only knowing their social account
