Yesterday a high school student working on a paper emailed me with a question: “Through ChatGPT i find that you have a article named: "Teaching History in the Age of YouTube and Wikipedia" but i am not finding it”You’re not finding it because I never wrote it. ChatGPT, as usual, is making shit up.

@clive @aparrish @samplereality I asked Bing how to run a language model without python and it told me to download a python script that doesn't exist. When I pointed it out it made up a GitHub repo that doesn't exist. When I pointed that out it just said "I can access it fine."AI truly is the future.

@fell @clive @aparrish @samplereality I asked Bing chat to write a piece of javascript that pinged minecraft servers and returned data while using as few dependencies as possible. It took code from a minecraft java API server pinging website and just assumed you could swap stuff out and act like minecraft servers worked exactly like that API.It at some point asked me during my inquiries of why its examples weren't working to give me my server IP, which I did, to which it faked itself pinging my server and getting the responses it needed. A+ for bullshitting I guess.I find the tech really useful for like basic stuff, but if you know absolutely nothing about the subject matter that it's talking about, it's terrible to use it because you can't easily point out the bullshit. It is, however, good at getting the tedious basics out of the way.And it seems sometimes there's a 50/50 shot between it giving you an absolutely perfect answer, and it bullshitting multiple websites data together into a wrong answer.

@MoiraPrime @fell @aparrish @samplereality Yeah, same hereIt's very good for boilerplate code that's been done a zillion times and doesn't rely on pinging external APIsThe minute it hits an edge case, it collapses

@clive I asked about artworks by Vera Molnar and it listed several that did not exist and when I said they did not exist and if it could have fabricated some of them it replied "As an AI language model, I do not have the ability to fabricate or create artworks." @nzlemming @Flaky @aparrish @fell @samplereality For a long while MS seemed to swing back and forth from stable/good to janky/messy Windows 95 worked great, but 98 to 2000 were a horrorshowThen XP was terrific, followed by Vista, total trainwreckThen came 7, very good, followed by 8 which I didn't personally experience but heard bad things aboutI use 11 now on my desktop, it seems okay?

I’ve heard stories about Windows 98 being a bit jank, but 2000 I’ve only heard good things about. It was the base for Windows XP, which brought the NT kernel to the home. Are you sure it’s not ME you’re thinking about? Because there were plenty of horror stories there.I actually didn’t mind Windows 8, but I primed myself on it by using the previews. 10 was actually great until the updates made it worse. I’ve used 11 and it’s not worth my trouble, between the Microsoft account lock-ins and the jank I had to face running it in a VM.
