On CNN this evening, Trump's AG Bill Barr suggested that "keywords" should be scanned on social media to detect stolen intelligence materials, presumably including private groups, since the group where the current materials apparently originated was a private Discord group. This would be a massive invasion of privacy, and also vastly ineffective for a range of fairly obvious reasons.

@lauren that feel when keyword scanning avoidance spawns a retro comeback to l33tsp34k [...now with ᵤₙᵢcₒdₑ! ]

By the way, the bipartisan panel seemed to largely agree with him.

@lauren that's a good reminder that we should have no absolute expectation of privacy on a service like Discord or Mastodon. If we want some communication to be truly private, we need to use something like @signalapp or similar that uses end to end encryption. (Obviously I agree scanning private servers is hugely problematic, and Barr exposes (again) how little he cares about our rights by suggesting it.)

@kkeller @signalapp You know what also works? Voice phone calls, which have a higher level of privacy inherent in U.S. law. Voice. Phone. Calls.

@lauren Yes, of course...I still remember when we were putting such keywords in our Usenet .sigs to create too many false positives for the NSA to process... little did we know.Of course, we just assumed the NSA was reading everything. We didn't actually know it for sure until the Snowden / AT&T leaks confirmed it.

@lauren you want me to *speak* to *another person*?!!? I'd almost rather get caught with classified documents. (FWIW Signal supports encrypted voice calls as well, for fokls who don't have my phobia of speaking to others.)

@kkeller Signal is going to be working in fewer and fewer countries as they pull out. Also, it's not clear to me if voice calls made over Signal would be covered by existing wiretap laws.

@cazabon A lot. Not everything. A lot of hype and hyperbole back then.

@lauren What an excellent solution to bad Access Management policies in the Pentagon: "Why don't we just look for our top secret stuff online!"Bill Barr - not smarter than a fifth-grader. 🤦🏻♂️
