@onlmaps @rysiek Not shown on this map :Lithuania was pressured into shutting down its nuclear power plant (Ignalina, 2×RBMK-1500) in order to join the European Union. Proposals to build a replacement have not yet materialized.Italy was an early but diffident adopter of nuclear power. Massive bribery from Algeria obtained an "exit".You may be interested by my list of countries which have nuclear power plants, and a population smaller than that of Istanbul.https://anonradio.net/asfo-2023-03-25/

@enkiusz @onlmaps @rysiek EU energy ministers announced a target of reducing end-use of energy 11.7% by 2030. So I decided to demonstrate what that actually means, in human terms.I ranked the countries in the EU in descending order by energy use, population, and GDP, and then drawing a line ― thus showing that what sounds innocuous, easy of achievement, and even trivial is in fact equivalent to cutting out entire countries with many millions of people.I'm planning on making a graph.

@publius @enkiusz @onlmaps I agree that the phrasing is somewhat… unwieldy. It might be read in a way that does no favours to the text.Might I suggest making it a bit clearer that this is a thought experiment? And maybe changing "must be elimintated" to "would have to be eliminated" or some such. probably also worth it to find some other word than "eliminated", tbh.

@kravietz @onlmaps @rysiek Yes, the Algerians managed to wangle a very-long-term contract to sell their gas.

@rysiek @enkiusz @onlmaps The various lists on that page are supplementary material to accompany the half-hour audio programme described and linked further up the page. That's the context they're primarily relevant in.But if the word "eliminated" makes you think of something drastic ― well, it should. Energy is the lifeblood of our civilization, and energy austerity means that people will die. Not by the millions, but conditions for poorer people and in poorer countries will deteriorate.

@publius @enkiusz @onlmaps sure, and of course it's your decision how to phrase things. I am merely providing feedback on why it might distract from the message.

@rysiek @enkiusz @onlmaps Realistically, I expect that the trouble inherent in implementing energy austerity measures will cause them to be quietly abandoned, like the German coal phase-out (and likely its internal-combustion-car phase-out, for the simple reason that many German car owners park on the street and have no easy access to charging facilities). But probably not until a lot of damage has been done.Regardless, I already have plans to present this information in a different way.

@publius @onlmaps @rysiek tbh this is a weird take 11 % doesnt sound that much. Is there some actual lanalysis behind it being infeasilbe? Or are you just handwaving?

@enkiusz @onlmaps @rysiek "11% doesn't sound like much" but it is the entire energy consumption of between 13 and 15 of the 27 countries in the EU, with between 52 and 68 million people, depending how you sort the data.I'm not sure what other kind of analysis you want. I could point out that decreases in energy use tend to cause economic distress and social unrest ; or that the only major such decreases in recent history came with the fall of the USSR, which hasn't exactly gone well.

@enkiusz @onlmaps @rysiek I could point out that Romania, for instance, has a per-capita energy consumption less than half that of France or Germany, and probably should increase its energy consumption considerably, just in order to reduce internal migration pressures within the EU.There's a lot of loose talk about "energy efficiency", but in fact the major gains in that direction were consolidated in the first half of the 20th century, and demand has risen steadily since. See attached.
