@jon Never thought about mixing bike and train, do most trains in your experience accept bike? If so, for an extra fee?

The train I would have taken to Mariembourg is here at Charleroi. That excursion is going to have to wait for sometime later this year…

Sambre cycleway. Well laid out, easy route. Although the scenery is a little bland.

And there it is. The total success of Georges Gilkinet’s international rail work to date - the Charleroi 🇧🇪- Maubeuge 🇫🇷 train, that now runs every 2 hours as a stopping train, rather than twice a day as an InterCity as it used to. #CrossBorderRail

Ah. More great timetable coordination 🤦‍♂️The Lille Flandres - Maubeuge TER arrives 4 minutes *after* the train to Charleroi departs #CrossBorderRail

However they DO now sell tickets to Charleroi at the ticket office in Maubeuge. Before they didn’t. Machines still don’t sell it though…

Next: TER Maubeuge - Lille Flandres. Because the Maubeuge - Paris Nord train I could have taken is cancelled due to the strike.

Police barriers at Lille Flandres. They fear a trade union protest could turn nasty a person in a bakery explained to me…

@coffee Folding bike. So accepted everywhere. As a general rule: all regional trains accept bikes (non folding ones too) pretty much everywhere. It’s high speed trains like TGV and AVE that don’t.

@jon Interesting, this year I'm going on #interrail but i'll rely on public transportation, having a bike would make it way more interesting and flexible. Maybe next year! Thanks for the insight

@coffee having a folding bike (my normal is a Birdy, not this larger Tern/Mini that’s my spare) has allowed me to plan trips radically differently. You can connect places together in ways you can’t do by public transport alone. It works very well! (And it’s good luck - I got given the Birdy and it’s been remarkably useful!)
