Who uses the #Mastodon "federated" timeline? Is it useful for anything other than procrastinating/random browsing? I'm not sure why it exists.

@J12t I think it's intended to aid discovery. But clearly discovery is a problem Mastodon has yet to solve.

@BjornToftMadsen Any thoughts on how you'd like discovery to work?

@J12t Big topic even for the extended messages Mastodon allows :)Probably some form of DHT with topic-->account mapping that all servers participate in. Topics could be built by hashtags, or later (when cheaper) LLM analysis.I don't have a problem about all instances knowing about all other instances - I think the problem only occurs when they depend on other instances to function themselves.I'm sure it's not as simple as I'm making it sound.

@BjornToftMadsen "Topic" is really hard. If I'm interested in "tulip" am I also interested in "flower"? If I post a photo with flowers on it, but I only do it once, am I interested in that topic? And then there is the spam angle to this. How does FediBlock work with a DHT? Also, I'm not sure that discovery by topic is the answer anyway. How do I discover topics I didn't know existed? How do I discover people who combine boring topics in interesting ways?(I don't know either.)

@J12t @BjornToftMadsen social graphs! by using social graphs! the reverse chronological firehose "non-algorithm" still has the decontextualization problem. if your feed is structured around your social graphs, you can easily connect people with potentially similar interests based on their expressed social relationships.this has been proven to have nice healthy outcomes on secure scuttlebutt, the problem they have over there is getting people onto their p2p system, which has its own challenges.
