People over on the invite-only beta of Bluesky (not sure how many users, but still a very small amount) are nice, happy, and excited about how interesting and open it is. Like Mastodon, it's an early decentralized social network (not compatible with the fediverse and like, with only one instance so far).Unlike Mastodon, it has much better UX, and people are very excited about getting to have good timeline algorithms that they themselves have control over. (I haven't done a scientific poll or anything, but my guess is most people online prefer algorithms to show them stuff they might miss vs. sequential timelines.)Everyone agrees Twitter is terrible now, but there's definitely a lot of people who haven't made the jump to Mastodon. I think Bluesky might end up attracting a lot of the people who are turned off by Mastodon being way too confusing and unfamiliar.

@Gargron @micahflee there's a large group of people who are technically illiterate and/or completely averse to change so having BlueSky look and work exactly like Twitter will be great for them.

@jcrabapple @Gargron @micahflee If it's decentralized, then it can't work exactly like Twitter by definition.

@micahflee @deskJet95 @jcrabapple I'm sorry, I'm not seeing any difference to any given Mastodon app

To be clear: Mastodon is excellent.

@micahflee As long as it’s truly open? That’s fine. Anything that drains the proprietary networks of users is fine by me.That said, I hope some sort of interop effort develops. There’s no competitive need to wall people into one place or another, and if Bluesky and Mastodon users can interact that would be ideal.Curious about what UX improvements they have on their end, too. Perhaps we can learn from what they do right.

@jeff @micahflee Yep, I won't consider migrating to any new space that doesn't federate. The cat is out of the bag.

@hosford42 @jeff to be clear, Bluesky itself is a proprietary social network. It's just built on a new open federated protocol called the AT Protocol. You can read about it here:https://atproto.com/https://github.com/bluesky-social/atproto

@micahflee @hosford42 @jeff Thanks for making this clear. I was about to ask for an invite, but if it is proprietary, it's not worth the trouble for me 🙂I wonder, why a new protocol is needed? We have #XMPP, #Diaspora, #ActivityPub and Matrix social networks already.https://xkcd.com/927/ again?Btw. for people seeking a more #twitterish experience on #Mastodon, maybe #Soapbox were an option?https://soapbox.pub/

@debacle @micahflee @hosford42 @jeff Right. Why make another protocol that do the same, when there is already so much software joining ActivityPub already.

@didek @micahflee @hosford42 @jeff I'm just guessing here:Any new #protocol, even if formally free and open, constitutes a hurdle for third-party developers. This leads to an advantage of the original implementors. Independent #freeSoftware developers can hardly compete. Esp. if protocol design and initial implementation come from the same company. Such a company will stay in power of the protocol, always. Maybe it is just "#fedWashing"?#XMPP and #ActivityPub give real #digitalSovereignty.
