I'm wondering which Fediverse services use (which kind of) encryption. I know that Mastodon doesn't use E2EE for direct messages.Friendica lists "Privacy with military encryption" on the feratures page and uses server-to-server encryption. https://friendi.ca/about/features/ But what about DMs or group messages?❓ Is there some kind of overview of how encryption is used by each Fediverse service?#fediverse #encryption #mastodon #friendica #privacy

The answer is noneNothing on the fediverse currently does any kind of E2EE at all due to ... a lot of complexities implementing it in this specific ecosystem. (and supporting multi-device)What you do have is encrypted data in transit via HTTPS

@feld I had secretly hoped that Friendica's ""Privacy with military encryption" would include DMs and group postings.

If they've made anything it would only work between Friendica instances. I haven't heard of this yet, though. I'll have to research what they actually built.

@pandora Maybe they refer to HTTPS? I'm not aware of any end-to-end encryption on the Fediverse. If you want private encrypted messages you should have a look at XMPP...

@jabberati Yes, XMPP is better for this, but not everyone in a Fediverse "bubble" might be willing to use it.
