In response to my blog post yesterday:The “AI Crisis”: Who Is Responsible?https://lauren.vortex.com/2023/04/09/the-ai-crisis-who-is-responsibleI've heard from an array of AI-affiliated engineers confirming my assertions. They tell of repeatedly warning managers and executives about the limitations of these generative models, ethical considerations and other concerns related to how they're being ordered to do training, processing, public availability, and more -- but being repeatedly told to move ahead anyway, all of these important issues be damned. And some fear repeatedly bringing these issues up, convinced that they will be fired and replaced with more "compliant" workers. An increasingly untenable situation. -L

@lauren This is why I think a 'six month pause' is impossible. It worked with cloning because there's an overwhelming culture of ethics in biology. In tech, the moneyed bosses will just charge forward, replacing anyone who gets in their way. There would be no pause, only six months of deceitful secrecy.

@DarcMoughty Oh yeah, the "six month pause" stuff was a non-starter all along.

@lauren An assumption that if they don't join the LLM race, either their stock price will dip or that they will lose the chance to own business territory which appears to be in contention. We will keep having these boom/panics as long as we have these conditions, whatever the new "platform" is.At least with Google+, I could understand what business model threat it responded to. LLMs? Not so obvious.

@laurenSome time ago I posted a LinkedIn comment proposing the current bent of IT to prefer younger and/or foreign workers might be because those groups are more 'compliant' than the seasoned pro; more concerned with a visa or income, they park their ethics at the door. I received hate mail for weeks.

@lauren @DarcMoughty I’m expecting another AI winter because it seems to me the claims being made for these systems so far exceed their capabilities that ChatGPT-enabled Bing will become the Clippy of the 21st Century. These systems have a merely coincidental correspondence with the truth, and I will be surprised if the grounding problem doesn’t take a while to get to work.

@lauren thanks. Thoose are great confirmations from the trenches of the very thing I wrote this morning: AI **MANAGERS** = kids raised without moral guidance: ttps://mfioretti.substack.com/p/weve-raised-ai-just-like-we-raised
