Hot Take: Other news organizations should strongly consider whether NPR's exit from #birdsite and the behavior leading up to it means that only public spirited, journalistic response is to suspend operations as well. https://www.npr.org/2023/04/12/1169269161/npr-leaves-twitter-government-funded-media-label #Solidarity #Journalism

@realcaseyrollins Because it's not true. And the latest in a line of explicitly hostile behavior towards news organizations. Also, as I've pointed out before news organizations derive minimal ROI from their activity on Twitter. Whereas e.g. Facebook drives back a lot of traffic.

@edgeoforever @dwl #ElonMusk was being a bit petty, yes, because he made the label interpreting their bias as affiliation with the state, which is unproven if not untrue. Thankfully, he's backpedaled on that and appropriately labeled #NPR as "Government-funded Media".However, it's pretty obvious that #NPR's behavior here is wildly disproportionate, petty, and unprofessional. This is something I'd expect with typical petty internet beef/drama--we're seeing this in how #MattTaibbi is responding to #ElonMusk, for example--but not an established, ostensibly reliable and trusted news organization.

@dwl Firstly, you're wrong, it is true. Aren't you a reporter? I would think you would already know this.https://www.npr.org/about-npr/178660742/public-radio-financeshttps://cpb.org/aboutcpbhttps://cpb.org/appropriation/historyBut even if you're right, #Twitter leadership lying is nothing new, so it's still petty, since #NPR was fine with being in #Twitter until they were the ones being lied about.

@realcaseyrollins @NecroBelch @edgeoforever Working on a detailed reply. But you are correct, that NPR is only acting now that their ox has been gored. The "state funded" was false and not apologized for. The "government funded" is misleading at best and dishonest. About 13% of local public radio station revenue comes from state or federal governmental units. For NPR itself the number is even smaller.

@dwl @NecroBelch @edgeoforever Fair enough. And this is where semantics come into play; #NPR is government funded, but saying so could create a perception that the government has a considerable amount of control over the organization. IDK if they do or don't, but I know at least there's no formal association beyond grant money. Are you proposing some sort of objective cutoff, where if an organization doesn't have, say, more than 25% of its funding come from the government, they're let off the hook and don't have such a disclaimer tagged to their account?

@realcaseyrollins @NecroBelch @edgeoforever By that measure a vast swath of news organizations would need the label due to various schemes that funnel real and tax expenditures to them. Twitter under Musk is capriciously targeting news organizations for punitive behavior.First example? Nope. But this is a good time for others to think strongly about whether participating (with little ROI) in that platform is a worthwhile from a moral perspective.

@dwl @NecroBelch @edgeoforever I'm not sure about a moral perspective, but #ElonMusk's behaviors to close up the platform (examples are banning links, hiding tweets or not letting users like or retweet them) are going to drive folks off the platform and kill the whole thing. I would be by no means mad if #NPR became a first mover and joined the #Fediverse.

@realcaseyrollins @NecroBelch @edgeoforever I'm saying that there's no rhyme or reason to it at all. Just Elon's fits of pique. And with his attitude towards the press as a civic institution, it's (past) time for organizations to look at the time, effort and promotion they put into that is (a) appropriate and (b) worth it.

@realcaseyrollins @edgeoforever @dwl If NPR is a government funded organization then what about Tesla and SpaceX which have both taken a lot of money from the US government. The reason Elon Musk did this was to strongly suggest that NPR is “fake news” and continue that false talking point. He wants his nonsense to be seen as credible as longtime news organizations. But he had no credibility.

@brennansv @edgeoforever @dwl > If NPR is a government funded organization then what about Tesla and SpaceX which have both taken a lot of money from the US government.Yes. So if the label isn't limited to political outlets, #Tesla and #SpaceX should be listed as government funded too.But I wonder what folks' barometer is for what should and shouldn't be listed as "government-funded". Is there a certain percentage of funding that must be met before it qualifies? Must it be a news/opinion source? An objective standard would be helpful here.

@realcaseyrollins @edgeoforever @dwl When it comes to social media, what really matters is the reach an account has combined with the information that it is spreading. If it is misleading and harmful that’s a serious problem. Elon Musk has spread harmful misinformation. It should not matter that his account is not a news organizations. Many people still make decisions about their health based on his impulsive remarks. At least with credible news orgs they will post corrections when they learn they made a mistake. I cannot recall when Elon Musk has done this. He typically doubles down or ignores criticism. He’s not accountable. NPR is accountable to both their listeners as well as corporations which fund it.

@brennansv @edgeoforever @dwl Not much of this is exactly relevant; however I do agree that it might be best to apply that label to all types of organizations, not just news organizations. Any government funded company may technically be susceptible to the whims of the government, to at least some extent.

@realcaseyrollins @edgeoforever @dwl It is less than 1%. And that’s just the excuse. The purpose of this label is to suggest NPR and the information it reports is dictated from a government that is intentionally misleading the public. That is not true.

@BlueintheSouth @realcaseyrollins @edgeoforever @dwl "So many people" are leaving Twitter. 🤣 OK, dyke.Publicly-funded NPR ragequit Twitter for being correctly described as publicly funded. NPR can negate the accuracy of the description quite simply: they can stop accepting the half a percent of their $3,000,000,000 budget from the taxpayers. That's all. It's very easy.

So either more people are being active, or the same people are being more active than before. Either way, it's a bit silly to say that #Twitter isn't useful to #NPR or any news organization for that matter, that's just a cop-out to forgo admitting the fact that they're only leaving because their feelings are hurt 😂
