Door to the tavern opens with a creak. The conversations slowly die, and, in a hushed silence, most people turn to the shadowy figure standing in the entrance as he strides purposefully inside, a long rapier by his side.- Me:Hello rsync. My name is Parade du Grotesque. You killed my files.Prepare to die.

This post was brought to you by my 100000th attempt to synchronize two machines using rsync and ssh.

And on a related note:source$ cat /etc/debian_version ; rsync --version11.6rsync version 3.2.3 protocol version 31destination$ cat /etc/slackware-version ; rsync --versionSlackware 14.1 rsync version 3.2.7 protocol version 31This is why we can't have nice things. How come the latest Debian version is behind an old Slackware when it comes to rsync???

@ParadeGrotesque Odd, I've never had much problem syncing with rsync/ssh - wth are you doing to it?

@penguin42 Nothing! That's the whole point: it's a stupid rsync over SSH between two machines. Period.Seems like rsync hates having two different versions, one at each end of the SSH tunnel. Also: lots of files, and lots of volume.

@ParadeGrotesque That's only a tiny version diff though - I wouldn't have thought that's a problem; I'm more tempted to blame ssh somehow

@penguin42 SSH is possible. I suspect Debian adds its own secret sauce to OpenSSH, while Slackware is much closer to the original.

@ParadeGrotesque the version mismatch does not matter. I have all kinds of different rsync versions everywhere and it's not an issue.Try running it with -e "ssh -vvv" and see if ssh itself spits out an error message.@penguin42

@fedops @ParadeGrotesque @penguin42 Never encountered this on this little gap between rsync versions. Maybe use the rsync --timeout option and add keepalive parameters to ssh/sshd, as errno 32 is caused by idle connection (or full disk on destination). And -P is useful to resume rsync transfer from where it failed.FYI rsync 3.2.7 is in debian's testing repository.

@appzer0 I am definitely investigating the timeout and keepalive parameters. But that's for the next rsync run. 🤓 Thanks!@fedops @penguin42
