Is there a tool that knows the vast network of the #Fediverse in total, then compares the data from your instance and finds out what percentage of the whole Fediverse your server is aware of? This would be very interesting data to a small instance owner like me.I feel like my instance mementomori.social federates already quite widely because of me being very active and via good relays and fedibuzz, but I have no way of knowing for sure. It would be fun to see statistis like "this much of the world you see right now" and watch it grow. #MastoAdmin

@rolle @atomicpoet or @reiver might be able to answer that. And @seb (my admin) would probably like to know the answer to that as well!

@rolle you can get the number of domains your server knows from your database and then compare it to the latest report from @mastodonusercount

@rolle i doubt there is any tool that knows the size of the whole fediverse, to be honest. But, yeah, I’d also love to know that figure!

@michael There could be a tool that is "close enough". I remember Eugen posting about him knowing the exact number of users. 🤔

@rolle @esther @mastodonusercount i remember there being some command you could run in the javascript console on the mastodon web client that told you how many instances your instance knows of, but i don't remember what it was (and it was months ago so there's no way i'm finding it)

@markmetz @rolle @atomicpoet @reiver @sebhttps://instances.social/mementomori.social suggests you federate/connect with 83% of known instances. No idea how accurate that is.I'm only federating with 40%.

@rolle open a rails console and run:Instance.all.countAlthough that'll include inactive and blocked ones as well and the number will probably be higher than the user count report since that lists "active" instances

@rolle @april @esther @mastodonusercountIf you download the instances.json file from that site you can inspect number of domains plus statuses, connection plus more.awk & sed are you friends for quickly distilling what you need. BTW I note number of instances grows gradually over the month and then decreases on the 1st. I presume that's when they do a cull of non-responsive/dead instances.

@admin @rolle @atomicpoet @reiver @seb One of my favorite things about the Fediverse, we get to learn new things every day, and there’s constantly innovation! On a sidenote, it seems that one would not want to federate 100% because there are certain servers who are Nazi / spam hell holes who deserve to be blocked.

@rolle interesting question. If you extract some stats from your site and then compare them with some of the stats in https://fediverse.observer you may come close to the answer. 🤔

@admin @markmetz @rolle @atomicpoet @reiver @seb that’s just server connections, though. It would be interesting to see a similar measurement for post/user awareness. You’d have to look at the total post count and compare to the amount of inbound posts received by the instance.

@markmetz @rolle @atomicpoet @reiver @sebI'm guessing that mastodon.social has federated with many long gone instances and they are not forgotten in their database. But even accounting for migrations - still looks quite odd. The 17k total used today seems realistic with other sources.

@rolle How big is your database currently if you follow everyone very widely? Are you removing old statuses, or keeping them indefinitely?
