People often ask me why it takes time for me to repair their laptop.Maybe because I do a backup of their system, make a hash, restore the backup, see if it works, do a second backup and check the hash, then burn it on bd-r and check the hash again.Depending on the state of the hardware it can take time.Of course I could do without any backup and just do like when I began until data loss day, which happened.Maybe I also do a Ram test, which takes time.Maybe I do a SMART/badblock check of the HDD.Maybe I check the electronics.People are so used to tech either just reinstalling windows or installing ccleaner without further explanation of what they did with no reports, nothing at all to justify their worktime/fees that they seem angry when someone does a tasks that seems "the same" but takes longer.

@mangeurdenuage >then burn it on bd-r and check the hash againThat seems extremely redundant, I'd just do a dump to an external hdd and hash it.

@mangeurdenuage Windows is so clusterfucked that sometimes reinstalling it and restoring their personal stuff like photos or whatever is the much less painful option. I used to work in tech support, I always just did a backup of the whole user directory to an external drive just in case something went wrong.

@mangeurdenuage Includes their documents, pics, browser settings and so on. Backing up windows system files is kinda useless cuz reinstalling windows and restoring user data is quicker than restoring a full disk image anyway.

@dushman >Windows is so clusterfucked that sometimes reinstalling it and restoring their personal stuff like photos or whateverI'm aware, I've been working in the field for a few decades. But you also need to be able to restore everything as it was, not only for legal reason but also for disturbed people who are not sastified with what you did.Not happy ? Want me to put how everything is ? No problem, now they can fuck off and ask for some big brain who only knows how to install windows and adobe reader to do it.>is the much less painful optionIt's especially the most economically safe. Outside of course of GNU/linux OS.>I used to work in tech support, I always just did a backup of the whole user directory to an external drive just in case something went wrong.I had HDD dies on my suddenly while I had backups on them, never again. Optical didn't fail me until this year and it was because I bought cheap LTH coated BD-R instead of the hardened coat, I knew what I was getting in tho, that's why I didn't burn important stuff and just animu on them.

@dushman I had drives dying in front of me after 1 hour of usage, I had drives never dying, I had drives dying exactly the day after the warranty ended, I have enough experience with drives to just uses the high end ones WD produces and they have been lowering their quality since 2012 and I'm angry about it.Thus another reason for burn on 25/50 and 100GB BD-R which can live at least 10 years and more without issue.

@mangeurdenuage For the tech support stuff though, the odds of my external drive just dying during the short window of time when it was the only were slim, so I just went with that. Most of the time I didn't even have to reinstall windows in the first place and then it wasn't the only copy for a short period of time.

@anotherposter @dushman >so i want to know more about hardware side of thingsThe best book ever for starters on that subject is "Code: The Hidden Language of Computer Hardware and Software" by charles Petzold.I consider that this book should be mandatory in any computer course. You can't go lower than this, outside of how the physics of electronics work, and can't simplify more for education. The "Anotated Turing", also by charles petzold, is a good book to understand the underlying mathematics of computerscience.

@anotherposter @dushman If you started to read tanenbaums works then you'll have a good time reading petzold's work too.

@anotherposter @mangeurdenuage I set up Minecraft and Mumble for us. Mumble is voip software btw, great alternative to discord. You can self host it on just about any machine due to its very low resource usage.

@usernameswift @dushman @Zergling_man @anotherposter @mangeurdenuage I was pretty happy with it, it could seriously use some nicer lighting, though, it feels like MC alpha. Past that I mean, it feels ~weird~ cos of the differences but not bad
