If you're seeing all these #BandcampFriday posts and thinking, "Eh, why bother?" let me point out that the $15 you spend on Spotify this month goes almost entirely to guys with "executive" in their job title/description, with the remainder going almost entirely to already hugely successful artists who, frankly, do not need more money. No one cares you spent the money. That same $15 on Bandcamp today, if spent on an indie artist? About $14.50 goes to the artist, and you might make their week.

@etherdiver I fully believe you. Nevertheless, is there an article with a breakdown of costs?

@gerbrand @etherdiver Bandcamp pays artists an average of 82% of the money.https://www.hypebot.com/hypebot/2022/01/bandcamp-shares-rare-stats-including-how-much-better-it-is-for-new-music-than-spotify-apple-music-amazon-music.htmlSpotify pays $0.003 - $0.005 per stream.https://dittomusic.com/en/blog/how-much-does-spotify-pay-per-stream/So best case, for an artist to make as much as they do from you buying a track for $1 on Bandcamp, you'd have to play the track 164 times. And most independent artists will be getting the lower rate, meaning they need 273 plays to make as much.I can think of a few albums I've likely listened to more than 164 times, but they're the exceptions.

If you don't support art where it's actually being made for art's sake, and not to make money, you're going to end up with nothing but art made for the purpose of making money. Fuck that. Fuck ALL corporate art. Steal anything they make that's good and give your money to actual, independent artists.

@etherdiver What bugs me, If I play a greatest hits cd from my own, a (long dead or retired) an artist gets nothing. While if I buy an album or single, the artist gets paid even when playing it just once. For Spotify, it's completely opposite of the above.

It might sound corny af, but you could literally change the trajectory of someone's life with that $15. Hell, spend $5 on three different pay-what-you-want albums and change THREE people's lives. At the level of a lot of indie artists, EVERY SINGLE SALE is encouragement to keep going, a little nod that someone out there cares about what you do enough to spend real money on it.Imagine validating someone's entire existence for the price of a cheap-ass lunch, or a couple of drinks? Amazing.

Seriously! I remember the first time a stranger ever bought one of my albums like it was YESTERDAY. Do it! Change someone's day, week or even their whole damn life!

Oh, one parting thought, for those who don't have the means to support the art they love financially...who are laughing at the idea of having the luxury of spending $15 on Spotify, much less Bandcamp: I get it. I have been "shake the cushions poor" before, and scarily close to having no cushions to shake once or twice. Support also means boosts, shares on other media, and just telling your friends about the stuff you like.

I like honest engagement with my music and with me personally just as much (hell, more TBH) than money. AND! If you like my music enough to actually want to hear it in hifi (i.e. download the .WAV files instead of streaming 128k mp3 off the web), but can't pay for it, I'll just give you a code. I give them away en masse from time to time, or just ask me for one. Unless you're posting pics with stacks of cash and sports cars, I won't say no!

The TL;DR is don't feel bad if you don't have the means to financially support artists you care about. Just tell us you like what we do, that's just as nice.
