No true artist is going to get upset if you "erase [their] identity as an artist". They will feel overwhelming relief

Hoping to finally pick up one of those part time jobs that come with An Identity™ so I can stop having to tell people I'm an artist

Self employment is sending me to an early grave but I'm barely touching a PAYE job and I'm already like, oh all the weird ways people behave make a lot more sense now. I'd forgotten what most people have to put up with on a day to day basis from their employers

If someone has a problem with me in my day to day life, they can't appeal to my parents, they can't have a word with my husband, they can't try and make a vexatious complaint to my employer. This should be normal, but it's not for most people. While I am used to individuals trying to elbow their way into a supervisory role in my life, it's weird watching how large organisations go about it.

Spotted a job with free epilepsy training, which would be ideal because I've been freestyling these seizures for a while now and could do with more of a formal structure

I'd be laughing about all the unfilled poorly paid vacancies that are hard manual labour + require a driving licence, but they're care assistant vacancies, and while these employers are playing chicken with a rapidly shrinking demographic of able bodied people, vulnerable people are going without health and social care

The NHS BANK are still trapped in a "doing you a favour" mentality, expecting you to pay for your own DBS on a £10.50 p/h casual job, and an invasive and unfriendly onboarding process. Local corporate agencies are paying the same but also offering DBS for free and being a lot less invasive and more pleasant. You'd accuse the NHS of being short sited if it wasn't deliberate on a systematic level

While these agencies are wildly profiteering from public money which is never acceptable, weirdly enough a fair amount of the massive fee they'll be asking for probably actually is because it's covering basic additional provisions for the workers

I have actually applied for my dream job, have a couple more that I'm ambivalent about I'll try and I'm determined I'll at least try and find some sort of health/social care vacancy that isn't wildly piss taking. I've spent a 3rd of my life (and nearly my whole working life) living in this town which makes the search so much easier, because I know through word of mouth which employers to dodge

Look, if you have a drivers licence and full access to a car, are able bodied, AND can pass an enhanced DBS check? You don't have to accept bad work conditions and around £11.50 p/h

Hey Mastodon. I'm in a position (mentally, physically, and logistically) where night shifts seem feasible, but I've not worked them before. I did late shifts a few years ago (bar work) and that house renovation last year had me up at 4:45am and home for 9:30pm.One of the jobs I've applied for might be 3x 12 hour nights in a row per week, with barely any commute. It would mean I can afford a mortgage on a very nice flat (or very shit house). Am I letting hubris get the better of me?

Thinking about this a bit more I had an ex who worked 12 hour nights so I know what it's like day to day and it's definitely something I can handle. I'm still interested in hearing more about other people's experiences if anyone has anything to add

@nuala As you'll know from the ex it depends on your life. When you like to do things. When you see people. If that's not a consideration, go for it.

@sullybiker I think a big part of it comes down to how much you can centre yourself in your own life. Night shifts are great until you're having to coordinate with literally anyone else's routine.
