I cannot give my mom more than $16K a year to help her out without having to deal with hitting tax issues if more is given. On the other hand, Justice Thomas is allowed to receive well north of half a million dollars worth of gifts tax free because it is in the form of meals, transportation and lodging. Just another example of our laws and tax code written to benefit the wealthy (who don't even need it) and not the average citizen.

@DiamondHeighter except he was supposed to report the transportation, as the statute only carves out food, lodging and hospitality. Oops!https://www.propublica.org/article/clarence-thomas-response-trips-legal-experts-harlan-crow

@MikeTRose I keep hearing that this reporting requirement by the feds has just started recently but I don't actually know or have read whether this is any kind of violation that he can be held accountable for breaking. It is certainly wildly unethical and his excuse is obvious BS. I also don't understand the IRS requirements regarding reporting these sorts of things as something that can be taxed. Cheers!
