I've been spending some time lately playing around with the Nix tool Home Manger, and I've got to say, I'm *really* impressed. It's really well-designed and intuitive to let you manage your entire user environment in one tool - installing the tools you want, setting up dotfiles, adding configuration for the tools you use daily, etc. Thinking I'm going to start using this on my work and home machines.https://github.com/nix-community/home-manager

@misty I tried it a year or two ago and it was very dangerous on my Mac, managed to break things multiple times. Toot if you have a good experience I’d love to give it another go but I’m nervous.

@tebriel Curious, how did it end up breaking things? It’s been fine on my work Mac but I’m wondering what it did to you.

@misty my #1 breakage was builds failing in cryptic ways that I wasn’t able to search the web to resolve. That and my pathing was dependent on homemanager so my entire world was rendered inoperable if the env was incorrect. I had a lot of operational friction that I’m hoping is resolved. I probably should’ve made a “staging” env to test my changes, but I only have the one mac so it’s hard. I migrated to chezmoi after and am ok with how that’s going.
