When I try to write fiction, I always struggle with finding what seems to me like a plausible motivation for the villain. My husband always (rightly) comments that I am far too quick to discount plain old greed.

@grammargirl I was trying to find a motivation for my serial killer baddie and talked to a forensic psychologists about it, She said, "Oh they're doing it to get the high score."It was that simple.

@grammargirl If Greed was a bad motivator, the world would be a very different place. Also, the issue is not that there are too many greedy people, but that the few who are, are too greedy for everyone else.

@grammargirl Just once I'd love to see a villain motivated by sloth.

@grammargirl I personally find initial motivations fairly easy - greed, lust, perhaps showing up a parent or ex lover. I have a bigger problem continuing, and I worry I lean too hard on the sunk cost fallacy when they are a meticulous planner.

@grammargirl we were watching Kung Fu Panda 2 last night and greed was exactly the motivation of Lord Shen (the peacock). He is the quintessential villain, very much like Heath Ledger’s Joker.

@grammargirl (Disclaimer: I'm not a writer). In fact, any of the seven deadly sins should be more than enough. Even laziness: imagine a mischievous and manipulative co-worker, spreading lies in order to avoid doing his own work. And being successful. There are many other motivators. Most of all-powerful villains in fantasy and scifi act out of boredom, for example.
