The more toxic #Twitter becomes, the more toxic the comments I see here on #Mastodon directed at ordinary people stuck on Twitter who don't meet the "standards" that the Lords of Mastodon wish to enforce for their world.

And notably, whenever I make a comment -- no matter how polite -- like that above that dares question any aspect of the #Mastodon Philosophy -- many of the impolite responses that I get (both directed at me and anyone on Twitter) quite clearly help to prove my point.

@lauren do you see this sort of comment on your timeline, on replies to your posts, or on the federated timeline? I never see this on my own timeline, but I don't look at the federated one often enough to make an informed comparison, and I don't have enough followers to see any toxicity in replies to me.

@lauren I guess it's kinda like the social media version of the law of large numbers in the sense that also here, overall, it will become an "average" of people from all sorts of flavors, including across the politeness spectrum. I think in general it's great when diversity is high but that also includes seeing some variations I appreciate less, e.g., I also care about polite and respectful exchange but following the above there'll likely also be some impolite folks.

@lauren Or who use ordinary words for their move from Twitter and get their threads invaded by ppl who have taken ownership of the words which describe their feelings of getting out of a toxic environment and joining a widely supportive Fediverse, only to find areas where little had changed in terms of verbal violence committed in the name of word association/ownership with/against white folks.Bleh
