Are there people on here who are only capable of reading Mastodon posts and nothing else? I wonder because I see people asking obvious questions answered in articles after references to articles are posted, as if they are just too lazy to read the article themselves, at least the first few paragraphs.

@lauren I am not sure if this would affect things, but I know some applications had poor link-showing ability early on. You'd get a wall of text and then it would have "https://www.whatever..." at the bottom and that was it. My phone app displays the thumbnail and that stuff, which makes it easier to see the articles themselves.

@lauren Too many people don't even bother to read through comments before posting their own.

@lauren Do you politely let them know that the information is in the article? One of the reasons I like #Mastodon is that people take chiding the right way here. If you gently poke somebody in the ribs on #Twitter or even #Reddit, they often explode.

@lauren people are lazy! It's not a big surprise that some of those lazy folks made it to Mastodon.

@lauren I can say that personally, I am pretty lazy. But I can and do read things other than Masto. My laziness and ignorance don't stop me from posting much of the time.

@lauren Well, now you know Mastodon is really taking off because we're getting the social media types that react to the headline instead of reading the linked article. This behavior is common on Facebook. I've long fantasized about Facebook requiring people to write a summary of an article before being allowed to comment on a post that links an article.

@lauren Given that most people do not read more than headlines, those who actually do read articles are at risk of having opinions or writing posts considered nonsensical or unfounded by the headline-only majority.Actually reading articles, and even worse, reading them closely, is dangerous since it can lead social isolation and verbal abuse.(Yes, this is sarcasm.)

@lauren FWIW I stopped clicking URLs because too many lead to either paywalls, clickbait, or websites full of popup trash. OTOH if I want the answer to a related question I will search for it before I ask.

@lauren I’m making this statistic up on the spot right now, but I know for a fact that 99% of people don’t read more than the first few sentences of anything anymore, and they SURE AS HELL don’t click AND READ linked reference material…

@lauren Are there people who know the information and can answer a query with a few words, or at most one sentence who are too arrogant to do so but say "look it up yourself"?
