I feel nowadays every company, app or website has a subscription service they want you to pay for..For the most simple photo edit apps to supermarkets and car dealers... In the past they just simply sell you a product and be done with itNot sure if it's an improvement.. And I don't even mention all forgotten subscriptions that's practially thrown away money

Phone companies go even a step further and try selling you 'insurance' next to your mobile phone subscriptionMost of the times it simply doesn't work and 'it's not covered' so you pay for nothing, againWhen I was working for telecom company I was honest about this to customers, I just hate selling stuff that does nothing

@stux That's the whole point. Guess the percentage of people that never come to the gym past February after signing up for a "great yearly deal" in January ?๐

@stux Yes, to keep that balance of what you need, or just want to try out is such a hassle. *looks at three paid storage accounts, Dropbox, Google Drive and Apple Cloudstuff* I can't even easily close them as i need them all in some way.

@stux yep, just annoying. The worst thing is paywalls before news articles. I would be absolutely willing to pay something to read an article but god damn I don't want to subscribe to your newspaper exclusively. Why not pay on a per article basis?

@stux It's banking on people's lack of information. That's why we need to post again and again about the EU 2 year mandatory warranty and the soon to come right to repair for 10 years.

@stux I had a Samsung S3 that died just out of warranty; AT&T asked me to handle it as an insurance claim. I protested this was not an insurance matter but they said it was only way forward.

@stux I bought a mobile phone on a pay-as-you-go plan (which I always do, because I don't use it much) and they tried to sell me insurance. I declined. When they asked why, I explained that the cost of the insurance would equal the cost of the phone in two years, so as long as the phone didn't break down over the next two years I'd be ahead. They seemed a bit taken aback that I'd worked that out, but honestly, it was just logic.

@stux I totally agree, the subscription model is now the way of extorting money from most people

@stux So I paid about $200 because that was the deductible and fuck the customer. 2 months later, a framed picture fell of the wall and landed squarely on the phone, puncturing the screen. I could not claim again as 'too many claims' anyway this the story of how AT&T lost a customer

@stux my rule is, if your main business is not providing a cloud service that cannot be ran on normal midrange consumer pc, then I am not paying for the subscription. At least give a lifetime license option.

@stux I got a 200 dollar Huawei phone for the remainder of the contract and that thing remains one of the best smartphones I ever had. I should have done that first time around, rather than playing the ripoff handset game where you give 1000 dollars to some cunting telco for a service they barely provide

@stux I definitely learned that insurance covers as little as possible for the highest monthly fee they can get away with. It's so bad that I assume an insurance product is entirely worthless until I see evidence to the contrary.

@stux Theyโre running out of ways to innovate the products they sell. Then, like a spinal reflex, they change to from products to services so we can go from paying a lot for something else physical, like a phone, to something virtual and invisible, like the 0s and 1s flying in & out of our phones.

@stux As a software dev I feel like I can say it's like 70% not improved. The small improvement comes in you getting bugfixes and new features as they come out but I think ultimately the users still lose. "Own nothing" capitalism is garbage

@stux The best advice I read was "insure against disasters." Having to replace a phone is a pain, but it is not a disaster.

@stux it permeates nearly every market and its goal is to create dependency between customers and corporations. We're also slowly seeing more and more houses become rental properties for the same reason. It's a control mechanism that diminishes consumer power.

@stux @ClubTeleMatique I've heard that if everyone who signs up for a gym membership actually went to the gym, they would run out of space. :)It's praying on those who have a wish, but can't or aren't willing to make that commitment. Is this predatory? Probably a bit.(and I'm on that boat of those who aren't going to the gym enough...)
