So, here's the story of how this will go.Today, I moved some of the 11 boxes of Computer Shoppers sent to me from Ohio, from that auction we won. I have begun storing them away.I took one package, which had three 1994 Computer Shoppers, chose a random one, and then cut out a random page and double-sided scanned it.Then uploaded the two TIFFs together to the archive. Here's the result:https://archive.org/details/computer-shopper-test-scan

I've been taking it around to some scanning experts to discuss approach, etc. So, my plan is this:- Scan an issue to within an inch of its life, EXPANSIVELY- ZIP up the resulting "Raw Scans". They will not be in-browser readable.- I, or collaborators, will then take these raw scans and turn them into prettified, skew-fixed, properly set up scans. The idea being we can ALWAYS go back to the raws to re-do for various needs.

I will store the debinded, cut-up computer shoppers in case more work needs to be done, they need a flatbed ultra-scan for certain pages, etc. This is easily 100,000 pages. It's going to take a while. But we're going to save them. We really are. Thanks to everyone who was willing to contribute towards the purchase, Wes Kennedy for packing them up for transport, and to the donor who bought a top-quality feed scanner to do the work of this digitizing.

@textfiles Love those old packed to the brim-style ads. I also remember downloading FREEHAIR.TXT or something from textfiles.com with 33k6. The file was reading something like 'How to get a free haircut. Go to the barber and let your hair cut. If they ask you to pay, just slap them one and walk out.' Hrhrhr. Could'nt resist sharing that anectode :) nice to follow you here mate

@textfiles This is such a big chunk of relatively recent history that is completely missing from digital preservation. THANK YOU!

@textfiles I don't think the young'uns know just how hefty a single Computer Shopper was...and you moved 11 boxes of them? You are doing good work preserving them for posterity & future historical research.

@textfiles the problem with these is that now I want to buy all the things. Starting with some 4-color ribbons for the ImageWriter II.

@textfiles Also, CBZ format, please! I read PDFs for things with big text and low art, but anything like this (fiddly text, lots of art) needs a CBZ/CBR format. Sometimes I have to download a JP2.ZIP, scale the images to usable size, and re-zip it as CBZ so I can read.

@mdhughes Did you really think I was going to turn $3000 worth of computer shoppers at 700+ pages a issue into PDFs

@textfiles You did for the test scan! That'd be a horrific churn of rendering to do all of them. The test scan's CBZ is named zip, and the TIFs seem kinda big, but they look great. Simple Comic's rendering it a little slow is all.

@mdhughes 🎶No I didn't 🎶🎶I uploaded them as a .ZIP of two TIFFs, and then the archive took that ZIP as a CBZ and turned it into a PDF intermedia keeping the originals safe, and also made the in-between JPG compilation for the screen 🎶

@textfiles Looking at the JP2.ZIP now, they seem almost as good as the TIFs (not quite; thin white text on black is visibly mushy), and a much nicer size. Is there a quality setting on the uploader?

@textfiles Have you considered using a black backing sheet (behind the scanned page)?

@textfiles What format are the raw scans in? This is something I'd like to do when scanning magazines etc. I'd like to have a "master" that is the absolute best scan possible and derive PDFs or JPGs from that.
