@CliffWade I've had Covid around 6-7 times, despite being the most cautious about it of everyone near me.Probably for that very reason though. The people near me are not cautious about it at all, and also had it that many times giving it to me.

@CliffWade Should be worded "How many times *do you know that you have* had Covid?"I promise you, it's absolutely possible to have had Covid and be fully asymptomatic and just not know you have covid. My family had Covid in 2021 and in my whole family the only symptom we collectively had was my wife lost her sense of smell (this is what caused us all to test). So, I personally believe, if you think you haven't had Covid, you probably have.

@CliffWade The amount of immunity built up after the 3rd or so time + vaccinations makes the majority of the times I had it extremely mild, but I still seem to catch it. I haven't had it in quite a bit though

@CliffWade Yea, it was a very COVID Christmas in 2021 for us. Which had me & my now 11 year old bunking up in my room for a week together & masking up in the house whenever we left the room. And thanks. I am too. While my 11 year old has been fine since - I have had a weaker set of lungs. It definitely exacerbated the very mild asthma I had to the point where I keep an emergency inhaler with me at all times.

@CliffWade Once. I'm on Day 18, and still exhausted. I'd done everything possible to avoid it, but then my partner met up with her sister, who refuses either to mask or to get vaccinated. My partner got sick, and despite us masking in the house and sleeping in separate rooms it was too late; I'd already been infected.

@CliffWade you know, proper preventive measures, masks, visor, additional coats over scrubs. Also I was very cautious in supermarkets and such, disinfecting my hands constantly, wearing mask and gloves, avoiding direct contact with people, and then vaccines as soon as possible. I think that helped a lot. Also as a dentist I didn’t HAVE TO work with vivid patients, but on the other hand I literally had to be very close to their mouths and generate a lot of water air spray. Right now in Poland there are little to none restrictions except wearing a mask in clinics and pharmacys, but in my line of work it is useless and also even a little comical, because the first thing I have to tell my patients is to take off their mask.

@CliffWade I've not had COVID-19 once throughout the pandemic. I'm a retiring sort that avoids large groups of people as a rule. I'm vaccinated and current with my boosters, wear a mask in situations that can be likely places to catch COVID-19.

@CliffWade Before testing existed I'm 90% sure I had it. Haven't been ill since. Nobody believed me because tests didn't really exist. Honestly, I'm convinced many of us had it long before media & government were aware. The government was massively lagging behind in the early days, it was spreading like wildfire but nobody even knew (no tests!). By the time testing arrived it's even possible cases began decreasing without us realizing.

@cliffwade BTW, for those who have not had COVID once, there are active studies looking for participants to examine if there may be genetic (or common environmental) factors at play leading to increased immunity.Share the data that is you being healthy! You can help keep everyone healthy, and it isn't a "highly involved" process. 😉

@CliffWade None that I know of. It's a combination of luck (I did fly once during a lull when vax+mask was required for planes) and being extremely cautious. My friends/support system are not local. And while I'd love to just hermit all alone for years... I cannot. So roughly once a year we get together in the safest way we know. It's a risk, to be sure, but so is letting my mental health decline due to isolation.I don't see ppl normally. Don't dine publicly indoors, etc.

@CliffWade not had it myself, wife has had it probably 3 times - 2 times tested positive with symptoms and possibly once right at the start of it all. Obviously that one was speculative as no mass tests were around etc - but really severe symptoms for about 2 months. She hates the fact that despite being in close proximity to her, I’ve not caught it at all.

@CliffWade I'm actually incredibly shocked I haven't had COVID. I vaccinate whenever I needed to because I work in homeless services. I was directly exposed to a couple of employees (unmasked) and at several points had to have arguments with those we serve when they had COVID that they could pass it to others even if they tested positive and were asymptomatic. Basically we used the fact that we had several elderly at risk residents that they cared about as a reason they should isolate and mask. It's been very hard to wrangle risk factors and compliance in my line of work since, by nature, there's not a lot of trust in the homeless services system. It's so hard to build relationships, but I think our specific location has done well.

@CliffWade Had it once (that I know of) 15 months ago. Wasn't too sick, no hospitalization, but ended up with long covid.I'm half the person I used to be. It's heart breaking to not be able to do the things I used to do so easily. Don't get covid ... because there's no way to tell where you'll end up after the initial illness has past.

@CliffWade Caveat - Idk if I was exposed in the couple times I was with people, bc I could have been asymptomatic. I took every precaution, but other people don't. They wear surgical masks, readjust their masks etc. Since they don't test, they, too, could have been asymptomatic, or presymptomatic.

@CliffWade I've had it twice in two years (2021 and 2022) despite masking up and being extremely careful. My wife and daughter fortunately have never caught it. It's ironic because I've always been the one who's very insistent on taking precautions, more so than anyone else I know irl.

@cliffwade I got diagnosed with leukemia 1 year after lockdowns started in my area (3/2021), so I've been getting regular testing (mostly PCR) and immune support 2 doses of Euvsheld, and because of timing and stem cell transplants (which resets vaccines) I've had 7 COVID shots so far and super paranoid masking (P100 respirators for the first 9 months, then a well-fit 3M N95 Aura after that and still). My partner has a higher risk job situation than I (community college instructor for a trade skills department that teaches in person). I stay at home for now. She tests with rapid tests weekly and they lock down every time a student gets COVID and she wears a KF94 every day all day.But as far as we know, neither of us have ever had COVID.As for the leukemia, I've been in remission since the stem cell transplant I got in August 2021. Fingers crossed.

@CliffWade Technically, I've not had covid, but did have some sort severe respiratory infection just prior to COVID being a thing in Canada, so wouldn't rule it out. It was the sickest I've ever been and I now have mecfs. I had walking pneumonia 3 times prior to that so it's really hard to say.

@CliffWade As of 2023/04/03, the % of reports of "I've not had Covid!", is much higher than the average over the USA (I think only 20%). I don't know how much worse we did at preventing the spread (certainly we were far from the best), and how much this is a population sampling result.

@CliffWade i don’t *know* that I’ve had Covid. I have reason to suspect that i contracted it, was barely symptomatic, and gave it to @norgralin (we live together)This was in the early months before home tests were readily available. So we weren’t able to confirm it. Though the medical line he called seemed to agree that his symptoms were consistent with COVID.

@CliffWade I've had no positive tests but I'm still pretty sure I've got it once after going to the dentist's last summer - literally the only place I took off my mask outside of my home since March 2020. The illness itself was mild (after 4 vaccinations at the time) but I'm still figuring out whether it has lasting effects (there are some symptoms, but they could have other causes).

@alienghic I would certainly agree with all of what you said. In fact, I've worked from home for almost 8 years, and I've never had it, so that theory is certainly one to think about. Doesn't mean I can't, won't, couldn't have gotten it, just means I spend 99% of my time at home and that's likely why. Plus I'm vaccinated twice and always mask up.

@CliffWade Being in a tech job able to work from home makes avoiding COVID so much easier than in person jobs. I think in the first year line cook was the most job most at risk for catching COVID in California.I also think "very online" people on stuff like twitter or mastodon have more interactions with the people who developed some of the worst outcomes of Long COVID. (People who are now disabled enough to have trouble leaving their homes).Knowledge of how bad things can turn out from a COVID infection also helps provide that extra motivate to keep up with all the vaccinations and PPE.

@CliffWade I got sick very early in the pandemic, like two days after the emergency declaration. It was probably COVID, but a mild case, and at that time it was impossible to get tested unless you were sick enough to be hospitalized. So officially, I've never had COVID. I'd have to get an antibody test to confirm my suspicions. But aside from March 2020, I have a three-year no-COVID streak.

@CliffWade AFAIK, I’ve avoided it so far. I did wind up with what was - based on symptoms - diagnosed as flu shortly before Covid officially appeared in my area. With the revelation that Covid was probably present before it was found, I can’t conclusively say that wasn’t Covid, but there’s really no way of knowing for sure at this point.

@CliffWade Right now I have one positive pcr test and two negative test results for Coronavirus (COVID-19). My doctor does not know if I have COVID-19 or not. Other medical doctors have explained to me that COVID-19 has drastically changed and even pcr tests for COVID-19 are not always accurate any longer. I have kept up with the latest peer reviewed studies on COVID-19, outlook for successful treatment to eliminate COVID-19 infections and reinfections are bleak. My pcp said that now people can be infected with non detectable COVID-19 mutations. Sincerely, Monica Andrews

@CliffWade Two other households are in our COVID bubble with us - all of us immunocompromised. We make NO exceptions - we have worn masks since March of 2020, whenever in public. We started with double masking with cloth and Vogmasks, then moved up to N95s covered with Vogmasks, and then to Flo Mask respirators. We do not go in public without masks, except for medical procedures that cannot be avoided. And then we isolate after exposure, and test before being around anyone else. None of us - 7 adults - have had COVID. Part of that is privilege, part is luck, but the largest portion is not making excuses. The reason we have only very rarely seen anyone in meatspace that isn’t in our bubble is because we can’t trust most of them. All those saying “we’re being safe” when we can see their photos of them in restaurants and bars and concerts, unmasked. Claims “we are very careful” but they post videos of them in an airport with their mask hanging off one ear while they eat and drink. When they ask why we still mask, our answers have varied, but come down to: Russian Roulette has never been our game. There is no single event worth catching Alzheimer’s, or heart damage, or a stroke, or diabetes, or CovidAIDS. Thanks anyway!

@CliffWade jail basically forced me to catch it. My multiple requests for a vaccine booster are well documented. If not for being coerced into free labor as a trustee requiring me to either submit to solitary confinement or else scub shit writing off the walls of the psych jail cells I would have been fine but my stay was extended cuz I got covid the day I was finally transferred to a legal competency rehabilitation camp. Which apparent is a thing and supposedly not orwellian according to those who told me its for my own good as opposed to actually getting any potential access to therapy what so ever.

@CliffWade I don’t think I’ve had Covid but maybe I did asymptomatically? (I’m sure I made that word up). I feel terrible for those that have passed because of it obviously, but I feel equally bad about people that have long covid, I haven’t met anyone who does but it sounds horrifying and I hope they receive the necessary medical help and advances necessary to improve their quality of life soon.

@CliffWade 2 were test guaranteed, 100%, could trace my exposure (1 through work, 1 through bringing my kid to toddler time at the library) the first time though, was before we had any confirmed cases in my city, so they weren't testing yet. But my asthmatic ass was in the hospital with unspecified viral pneumonia, oxygen sats in the 80s at their best. They started testing people coming in with respiratory symptoms less then 48 hours later and we jumped up to like 100 confirmed cases almost instantly, (4 of which were people I had confirmed contact with) so I'm assuming I had it, was just ahead of the curve

@CliffWade @wariatFor me, I didn't know I had Covid until probably 5 days after I caught it. My mistress came down with it first.I remember going to a work meeting and feeling rather confused and not all that well. Returning home, my mistress tested and came out positive. I tested and came negative. I tested two days later and was positive. The first 3 days all I could do was get up and go into the study to sit in front of my laptop to watch youtube videos though I couldn't concentrate. My only other movements during the day were to see to my mistresses needs. I'd had 3 shots against Covid versus none for her.She was in bed for 5 days. I was more capable of doing things after 3. It was definitely 2 weeks before I felt remotely capable of doing much. My lack of sense of smell and taste came on slowly during the course of the illness. I remember smelling fresh baked bread when there was none which warned me I was about to lose my sense of smell. My sense of taste vanished.

@CliffWade as far as I know, I have not had it. I continue to take measures to avoid it.However, the pandemic was declared soon after I came down with a horribly debilitating respiratory infection. I'm sure that was from a social event where I sat close to public-facing workers who have since repeatedly tested positive for covid-19.Testing was not yet available in the area. The novel coronavirus has not been recorded in the area at the time. I still have doubts about what tore me up.

@CliffWade @CliftonR I don’t think it has sunk into the collective consciousness that MOST COVID CASES ARE ASYMPTOMATIC. We’ve known this for 3 years. We know that you can be infected but have no symptoms. We know that if you are infected and contagious, you PROBABLY won’t notice. You have about a 1% chance of dying, but you likely won’t be aware of it.Yet people still maintain the meaningless conceit that they know how many times they’ve had Covid.

@CliffWade - avoided it right up until January of this year, despite working in the live performance industry. But I suspect that once was enough to have done some damage. Haven't had it checked by my doctor yet, but I have been having random moments of lightheadedness, and am worried it might be long-term cardiovascular damage. It's scary and everyone should be avoiding getting sick!
