Opportunity Lost. The 6 month ban letter was flawed; so was the community’s reaction. Why there is more to life than The Letter, what we should learn from the experience, and what we need to do to carry on.garymarcus.substack.com/p/i-am-not-afraid-of-robots-i-am-afraid?utm_source=twitter&sd=pf

@garymarcusDo you see any problem in this explanation of why the moratorium wouldn’t work?https://aisnakeoil.substack.com/p/a-misleading-open-letter-about-sciBtw, the link in your toot doesn’t work. I think this one is better:https://garymarcus.substack.com/p/i-am-not-afraid-of-robots-i-am-afraid

@garymarcus suggestion for the future: don't write letters with people who release really poor models to guide 2ton cars under the name "autopilot" without any regulations, and who would benefit from their competition pausing their research and products.Tesla is 1000x more dangerous than parrot chat apps, lives are at stake.

@garymarcus yes, I agree to this. I witnessed some reactions of people about #ChatGPT that were completely out-of-the-world. Not from #AI experts, but from people who are making decisions about software development and who are seeking the so-called wow-effect. Their admiration for #LLMs and their total absence of critical thinking is something that is scaring me. This was one of the motivations I signed the letter without giving much thought to who might have which interest.

@BartWronski Guilt by association is counterproductive. The fact that both Elon Musk and @garymarcus signed the same letter does not mean @garymarcus endorses Tesla's "autopilot" releases.

@BartWronski I would guess that you haven’t read any of my many critical discussions of Tesla

@garymarcus I have, and this is why it puzzles me so much that you decided to sign a letter with him - and advertise his presence so broadly

@garymarcus as a random observer on the Internet, I have to agree, despite possibly having boosted some of those arguments against the open letter. l also tried to sign the letter but was told that I couldn't because I am unimportant. Perhaps this focus on experts and their views is part of the problem--because, after all, experts sort of build their careers on attracting attention by arguing with other experts... maybe it's time instead to start building a mass movement around these issues?
