I strongly recommend signing up on the #T2 waiting list. Trust me on this. And, no you don't have to leave #Mastodon! - https://t2.social/about

@lauren A lot looks good, but I'm left wondering: is it federated?

@lauren would wonder if it's federated. Also don't like the idea of another for-profit company. Also, the authentic conversations policy needs to *specifically* allow anonymity for self-protective purposes (e.g. making it harder for harassers to go IRL), and allow trans people's correct names, even if we currently have IDs under deadname/name assigned at birth. Too many times, "authentic conversations"/real name policies become attack vectors for harassment

@mybarkingdogs Sooner or later, the regulatory frameworks that are landing on other social firms are going to land on Mastodon. That likely will ultimately mean government IDs. So the kind of anonymity you're talking about will likely soon be obsolete (for some definition of "soon" which can't be specified at this point). Better start thinking about the implications of that now.

@joelvanderwerf I don't care. As far as I'm concerned after spending as much time as I have on #Mastdon (which I've mostly enjoyed), Federation is another name for chaos and in some cases hate.

@lauren @mybarkingdogs I don't see how that can be enforced internationally on a loosely federated system.

@joelvanderwerf Or to put another way, what I want is a system that I can point people at where they can sign up in five minutes or less, be assured of seeing all the replies to their posts, have comprehensive search capabilities, and not be harassed by users who harbor so much hate for so many people who aren't sufficiently "technical" or of the "correct" mindsets. A lot of this wasn't obvious to me until I'd been here for awhile. I don't see it getting significantly better anytime soon. The world will move on.

@lauren @emag @mybarkingdogs how would a US state prosecute a site based wholly overseas? Are they going to create the Great Firewall of Utah (for example)?

@emag @kkeller @mybarkingdogs The push for requiring government IDs to access ANYTHING on the Net "inappropriate for children" is utterly bipartisan. They have all bought into it.

@lauren That's understood (and it needs to be fought) but the site itself could hold said ID but *without* demanding it be displayed publicly, if that makes sense.

@mybarkingdogs Oh, I suspect the model that will be pushed will involve 3rd party data verifiers, so that *in theory* individual sites would not have the foundational ID details. But of course, those third party verifiers would have it all, permitting governments to demand the linkages to actual IDs and tracking info across sites -- and of course any accidental or purposeful breaches of those databases would be catastrophic.

@mybarkingdogs In other words, if a 3rd party ID database was breached and its information made public, it would be the worst possible outcome, and the concentration of data makes them information rich in this context.

@mybarkingdogs The massive bipartisan support these efforts are seeing suggests that they will eventually prevail. They have already been brought into force in the context of certain content (e.g. porn) in at least one state.

@lauren I tend to respect your perspective so I only ask the following because I genuinely believe they are what sets these services apart:- What is the underlying protocol?- What is the underlying business model?- How is it the same/different than twitter or the Fediverse? I cant tell by looking at the website and I dont know the founders, so the vision is far from compelling.

@ike I only have been online there for a couple of days. It is extremely young with a very small user base at this time. Being able to "transfer" my legacy Twitter verification to that system was very helpful, as is being on the ground floor, so to speak. What is very attractive to me is the individuals involved and signing up, who include some of the persons from the Twitter and Google universes whom I already know and whom I greatly respect. That's very meaningful to me -- I can't expect anyone else to necessarily have the same reaction, of course.

@lauren Yeah, not trying to poo poo it, just understand how its going to be set apart. I definitely appreciate the power of the network connection though, which is why I think its worth learning more about. ;) Will keep my eyes on it - so thanks for pointing it out!

@ike In general in my life, I view the people present as by far the most important aspect, with the expectation that with good people the probability of good things happening is dramatically increased.
