Give me the run down on soaps, shampoos, conditioners. What's the high-fructose corn syrup of beauty supplies? What do I need to be avoiding? What should I be looking for?I know it isn't as important as what we eat, but our skin does absorb shit so I'd like to avoid poisoning my largest organ as much as possible.

@King_Porgi @Tepid_Tapir Dandruff shampoos have antifungal compounds, usually some sulfide, which shouldn't be hormonal disruptors (unlike the plastic bottles they come in). However, needing to keep using them is probably a sign of a bigger skin problem. Try some simple vinegar rinses sometime between regular-shampoo washes and see if it keeps the dandruff down any better.

@Tepid_Tapir sulfates are the corn syrup of shampoo and conditioner, parabens to a lesser extent. i use a herbal essences sulfate free shampoo once a week at most. modern shampoos will last your hair a week or more, unless your hair gets really greasy. i use a thickening, but not moistening (this is important) conditioner every time i shower. if you have long hair this should be your routine. if you tend to have a lot of your length in the back, i recommend rubbing a little coconut oil (cold pressed is best) in the summer and when it gets really hot. it'll keep those ends from drying out in the heat but washes out very easily and won't spread to the rest of your hair unless you want it to. as for soaps, i don't have much to say. i usually just wash my hands with grit or sand soap because my hands get pretty dirty. for bathroom soap i just put a little germx on my hands.

@Tepid_Tapir Castile soap is based. You can use it for pretty much anything from washing yourself to washing dishes, clothes, house, etc. However for any newbies, the liquid stuff is more concentrated than the liquid soap you're used to- it's more akin to dish soap, i.e. you only need like a drop to wash your hands, or a few drops for shampoo and it lathers a ton. Propylene glycol, aluminum salts, parabens and sulfates are the boogeymen of skincare, but I honestly couldn't give you a medical explanation. I think they're all hormone disruptors and/or potential carcinogens. Neutrogena, CeraVe, and Cetaphil are generally the most safe, sensitive-friendly, and accessible brands you'll find commonly. If you want to take care of your biggest organ, avoiding UV skin damage is going to make a LOT larger contribution than changing soaps. A wearing a daily moisturizer sunscreen on your face and neck is literally the best and easiest thing the average person can do to prevent damage, that they don't do. A 15 dollar bottle lasts me 3 months or so. Even if your only sun exposure is driving back and forth to work or walking around ton. And even outside of summer.Hyaluronic acid and ceramides are the good guys in skin products that you can't go wrong with. Also important for skin health: washing your clothes and bedding regularly. And I'm anal about avoiding polyester (plastic clothes), but that's kinda just me.

@Tepid_Tapir Don't use anti bacterial soap unless you've interacted with something you wouldn't ever touch with your face. Your skin has a bacterial biome just like your gut does, and constantly using alcohol cleansers and anti microbial stuff nukes it every five seconds.

@Tepid_Tapir sodium lauryl sulfate is the big thing in shampoos and soaps. it's a strong detergent and lathering agent. it's not dangerous per se but it's very strong and will dry out your skin and hair. unless you're REALLY dirty you don't really need it. this kind of segues into my other no-no ingredient in hair products which is silicones (dimethicone, amodimethicone, Cyclomethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, etc). to quote a publication on it: "These are silicones that you cannot remove or penetrate with water, which can inadvertently damage the hair. The damage happens when silicones “stick” to the hair surface creating a plastic-like film, which prevents strands to absorb water, air and nutrients. Without regular usage of clarifying shampoo, hair becomes dry and brittle – which leads to damage, breakage and split ends. The problem with non-soluble silicones is the fact that they seal the hair shaft completely, allowing no moisture to penetrate the hair shaft until you wash out the silicone. If you do find yourself using products with non-soluble silicones or only just came about to learning about its negative effects, you can remove them by washing with clarifying shampoos otherwise known, as shampoos with harsher sulfates. However, these types of shampoos, although sometimes necessary, are drying to the strands." so as you can see when you use silicones in hair products they initially give your hair an artificial smoothness but over time it dries your hair and give you product build up, then to remove the product build up you have to use a strong drying shampoo, then you use more products with silicone in them to give you that smooth feeling, then the cycle continues.

@mushroom_soup @Tepid_Tapir What about making your own? I've made DIY dry shampoo for using corn starch, baking soda, cocoa powder, and tea tree oil. A small bit works really well for a week in the woods or a bad hair day without time to shower. I've heard you can do conditioners using some type of clay and oil, but those need to be combed in.

@mushroom_soup @Tepid_Tapir That's for sure. Never put unbuffered (aka undiluted) essential oils on your skin. They need need need a carrier, like olive oil or grape seed or coconut oil. Literally any oil will work. Tea tree oil is effectively as a clarifying and antifungal below 1%, and you can count on about 15 drips being 1 mL, so it's easy to dilute. 1/4 teaspoon in 1 tablespoon is over 8% concentration and will dry you out and possibly cause chemical burns if left on your hair or used to mich. It is good as antibacterial and antifungal though, so doing 1/4 tsp in like 4 tablespoons total mix will give you a strong anti dandruff shampoo if you mix it with any normal stuff or make your own.
