The #Aitutaki #lagoon is the reason why tourists flock to come to #Aitutaki in the Cook Islands. You spend a whole day enjoying the #turquoise waters, white sand beaches and sandbanks and #snorkeling among #colorful and #healthy #corals and #fish. https://ift.tt/vtZJh8r

@backpackandsnorkel How do you get there from the USA? Via Australia? Likely very basic accommodations. It looks great.

@Blanco 1/3I booked the flights right after the Cook Islands had announced a target date when they were planning to open the country for international tourism. Meaning the Cooks were still closed for Covid at that time. The only international flights at that time were travel bubble flights from New Zealand and from Papeete (PPT). So, I booked a San Francisco to PPT flight and spent a few days in Tahiti. As Rarotonga is the only international arrival port in the Cooks, you must …

@Blanco2/3…travel to Rarotonga first. So, I booked a flight from PPT to Rarotonga (RAR) and we spent a few days in Rarotonga. And then we took a domestic flight from RAR to Aitutaki. Rarotonga is nice and relaxed and Aitutaki is nice, but much more rural and even more relaxed. After our time in Aitutaki was over, we flew back to RAR and them PPT.We are neither luxury nor budget travelers. I consider ourselves value travelers. Value traveler means that we decide what is …

@Blanco3/3… important to us and then we find accommodation that provides us with what we are looking for. For Aitutaki, we were planning to only sleep in our hotel and spend the days on the beach, snorkeling, kayaking and exploring the lagoon. We found that in Ranginui’s Retreat. Here is our review (https://backpackandsnorkel.com/Aitutaki/#ranginui) with some photos (our Aitutaki Purple Guide has 6 photos, while the website has 4). Be advised, Aitutaki has more basic and much more luxurious accommodation too.

@Blanco4/3I just did a quick flight search and it seems there are very few flights between PPT and RAR these days. That means that Air New Zealand through Auckland is a good alternative. If I would go again, I would compare the Air New Zealand itineraries with manually built itineraries that include PPT-RAR. The advantage is that Tahiti is well worth a few days with its black sand beaches and the flight to PPT is much shorter than the flight to Auckland (AKL).

@RainbowWarrior it totally is. Crystal clear and the most beautiful turquoise you can imagine. A bit further out by the reef is fantastic snorkeling among healthy colorful corals. This is one of my favorite places on our planet.
