How much you claim a profession's job can be automated (though AI) is inversely proportional to how much you respect the profession and the people in it. A lot of the time you just reveal who you respect and who you don't.

@tante is a profession respected because of the (good) work that is done in the profession?Consider this: Journalists can be replaced by AI.But only: if they only rephrase press release.Programmers will be obsolete. But only: if they just write boilerplate all day. Conclusion: the baseline for effort in a profession reached a new baseline. Some might perform below this line. This people are neither respect nor will they continue to have work.

@tante I disagree. I suspect automation decreases quality for many tasks https://mathstodon.xyz/@maxpool/110129012922968201AI is replacing people by doing it order of magnitudes cheaper, not by providing better quality or service.

@tante There’s some truth to that, but maybe there’s more nuance? I think a lot of the work that could be automated through “AI” is what I’d call “white collar drudgery” — mindless repetitive computer tasks. I don’t think it’s a lack of respect for people stuck doing such boring work to say that work could be automated.

@tante the ability to automate is objective. Respect is subjective. I can claim factual things and still be respectful.I'm a coder and I can understand how certain parts, even if a small portion, can be automated.ChatGPT has already done some heavy lifting for me.I agree the notion respect is crucial, but it shouldn't collide with facts

@tante @thierna not restricted to AI—think about how software engineering from its very beginning has been an attempt to automate secretarial/administrative work (or, more boldly: women's work in general)

@tante this is simplistic and dangerous thinking. In my jurisdiction, if you’re a tax lawyer, a significant part of your job has already been automated by a company selling legal opinions to order for about five years now. Their opinions at launch had a 95% success rate. In my own area of law (family) I predicted that I’d have about thirty years before most of my job got automated. 11 years in and I still think I was right.

@tante Not necessarily. I'm concerned for certain doctors BECAUSE I care for them. Many whose practice is 80%+ diagnosing are in real danger of being replaced by a robot, because eventually, robots will be better at correlating symptoms with causes, because the robot can compare to the data of millions of previous patients in real time.

@tante I’m not sure which or how many jobs can be replaced by AI. What I am fairly certain of is the AI thingies we are seeing right now are pretty much like the first attempts at cars which were also laughed at.We don’t see to many horse drawn carriages anymore, and the need for stables has gone way down since then.
