I've been wanting for several years to see what happens if one puts a spark gap generator outside of the CME data center.https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-05-12/mysterious-antennas-outside-cme-reveal-traders-furious-land-war#xj4y7vzkg

Buy an options straddle on S&P or Nasdaq futures. Set off the spark gap generator. Watch volatility go apeshit when all the HFTs providing liquidity get disconnected from the exchange. They'll have a backup connection over wired internet, but they'll only use that to pull all of their orders off the book until they get their wireless connection back.

locate fiber lines in the forests and strap with shaped charges designed specifically for poking holes in steel piping underwater.

Fiber lines are easy to cut and difficult to repair. A copper phone line can be spliced back together in place. If a fiber line is cut, a new line has to be run from endpoint to endpoint.

Yes, and most fallbacks depend on fiber. Copper is also high latency which impacts the ability to do any efficient trading.

That's why HFTs use wireless antennas to route their orders to the exchange. They're in a race with each other to get their orders filled a few milliseconds faster than their competitors.

It depends on if you have a complete fracture or partial though. It is glass and will transmit kinetic energy pretty far from the break in either direction.

Definitely depends on the extent of the break, was it just cut? Cut multiple places? Crushed? Etc.

It isn't a big deal, but the loss is still there. If you have to splice enough times, you lose your link loss budget.> For each splice, figure 0.3 dB for multimode mechanical splices (0.3 max per EIA/TIA 568) and 0.15dB for singlemode fusion splices. https://www.thefoa.org/tech/loss-est.htmMore of a problem I think is that if you don't know *where* the break is, it takes time to locate it, with the link down for the duration. Multiple breaks increases the time. :02_shrug:
