@clive thanks for the well thought out anc relevant article. There is a lot of information on this subject I’m still trying to wrap my head around, but I liked your key subject about how this tech that’s supposed to be open is being consolidated into a few powerful hands, which is frustrating to say the least.

@clive I think the good news is the evidence is that while training a model requires a megacorp, fine tuning can be done relatively cheaply, and running a model can be done on ~consumer grade machines. I think Apple is well poised to take advantage of the fact that now there is a reason to upgrade your iPhone/Mac, but they need to get into LLMs soon before someone beats them to the punch.

@carlmjohnson Yep I think that’s right — Apple has the ecosystem for centrally training a big model and deploying small edge versions that are custom trainable to small devices
