A quick update. While I very much myself enjoy participating in the #Mastodon ecosystem, and currently plan to continue doing so as I have been, it's perhaps worth noting that I've essentially ceased proactively recommending new people come to Mastodon.I am frankly tired of hearing back from people I had recommended join Mastodon -- including advanced techies galore -- express dismay at the continuing awful signup flow and/or the frequent hostility from many in this ecosystem toward new users who don't fit the apparently "preferred" personality and belief system profiles or origins. Please don't argue with me on this post about the signup flow or how you and your friends have been treated so wonderfully here. This is simply a statement of where I am on this matter at this time. Thanks. -L

@lauren I completely understand this. I have used Mastodon for a long while and while I enjoy my experience, there are times when I refrain from participation due to “cultural” differences

@lauren IIRC, when I signed up for the birdsite in 2009, it was exactly the same. Is it a function of The Internet, or humanity? Or of the people who were like that in early Twitter being the first to move here? Either way, you're entirely correct, alas, alas.

@lauren 100% agree on the signup flow. For some reason, I myself have never encountered any hostility. Maybe I'm using Mastodon wrong! :)

@lauren Back in the day (like January) you would get called out for failing to put a "content warning" on political posts. I think things have mellowed a bit.

@lauren I think this is inevitable.No-one makes money from Mastodon. The priority here is to maintain the integrity of the protocol - to avoid breaking the machine. That puts lots of bits of the machine in full view Also, the idea is to let users make choices, so the choices are laid out in front of them.Commercial services want to suck you in, to monetize you. So they bait the hook. They do all the choosing. They take away decision making.

@lauren The signup flow is so dumb! Following people is dumb! "Here's someone you might like to follow! Please... log in? To the thing you're already using?"

@lauren the signup and federation is an issue for sure. Difficult to fix without breaking the fundamental point. The other bit… hmm… there is a people problem, not a technology problem.

@lauren I signed up before Melon Husk closed on Dead Bird. My instance was an older version of Mastodon and no-one was on it. I ended up closing that account and came back a couple days later before finding a local up-to-date instance with people I know in my area. It made all the difference. I keep a list of all the people I've followed (yes, I know you don't have to). So far, it's a breath of fresh air.I've also pondered running my own instance but don't wanna spend $100/mo on Linode or AWS charges. I'd be interested in discussing your self-hosted instance with you. Send me a DM if you're interested. And it's fine if you pass.Thanks.

@lauren while the signup is not optimal, things get even worse when you dig in. I stopped my most active #Mastodon recommendation when realising it’s quite likely you will not seen the vast majority of replies to a post, when clicking a post. They are not fetched, only ones the instance happens to know. This is just too big a break from how people would assume discussion works. It’s a known issue for years and as yet no fix.

@lauren I’d love to learn more on how the setup flow could be improved, what the gotchas were and the sticking points between each of the user types. Maybe Mastodon can learn more from it.

@jeff @lauren Came here looking for this response. Thanks. I too have reined back in my recos, or at least, tried to target them more realistically. Took me a month or two to realize that even my closest, most liberal friends were too comfortable to engage with anyone outside the Naziverse. Because that is what sells, and selling is comfort. Let them eat Doritos.

@thisisrjg @lauren I think that's part of it - people 'have' their twitter, a group of people and references. Here is often sold as twitter 2.0 but in truth it's hard to find all your twitter friends and sit in that same bubble, It's good that people read further, talk to new people. But people are people, and inevitably there will be disagreement, misunderstanding, mistakes - and with little built up good-will to mitigate or explain.

@hatter @thisisrjg It's more than that. The Mastodon model is fundamentally flawed ("limited"?) in key respects that make it unreliable beyond "fun toy" status. You can't even count on seeing all of the replies to your own posts! That's a foundational requirement, and just one of various that is missing.

@anders @Setok With all due respect, if fixes aren't in the mainline code, their impact is not consequential to the vast majority of users.

@lauren @anders I absolutely agree. But this offers some form of a fix on an individual level. But we do need something system-wide.

@lauren Yep. I avoid conversations about Covid and masks because I know that my view won’t be palatable. (Such view being: if you’re expecting all of humanity to wear a mask for the rest of time I fear you’ll be disappointed.)So rather than this becoming a place where you can have a genuine conversation, it’s become a place where I watch the extreme ‘left’ view float by and because I’m a bit more in the ‘centre’ I don’t engage. I know it won’t end well.

Mastodon API was not even altered in Pleroma to make this stuff possible.

Pleroma uses websockets and Mastodon prefers SSE. Large Mastodon instances probably can't cope with that many simultaneous websocket connections. That's how Pleroma can instantly push this stuff to clients. The backend is designed for it; it's very cheap to do. It gets a lot more expensive in Ruby

Twitter had to stop using Ruby too, but they went with the JVM instead of the BEAM.
