Mass Shootings.I learned something "new" today and thought I'd share. I was reading a news article about the Tennessee school shooting. The article reference a stat that there had been 131 mass shootings already this year. And I thought, wow... I did not realize there had been that many. The article referenced https://www.gunviolencearchive.org so I went to look at the data. In the back of my mind, I'm remembering a definition of mass shooting to be more than some number of people in one incident...

I was thinking it was 3 or 4... So, apparently, it is 4 or more, but not including the bad guy. But the numbers still looked... off. The number people was way to big for the number the incidents. So I looked at the sites definitions.... turns your, the site tabulates injuries as well as deaths. So the 131 incidents has 4 or more people injured OR killed. Of those, 13 incidents had 4 or more people killed. So this site and the government are using different definitions, but the media...

@BobB It's an abstraction of the (FBI's?) definition of mass-murder which is 4 victims. The majority of 'mass-shootings' are not newsworthy so they only get added to the list which is published as a statistic when a newsworthy shooting occurs. Also note that they're intentionally muddying the waters with 'per capita' stats in rural counties. If someone in a county of 1000 shoots their spouse then the county's murder rate per 100,000 makes it look like the killing fields.

... the media treats it all the same. So there is a headline number of over 10,000 people... but almost 6,000 of those are suicides. The remainling (more that 4,000) including injuries and deaths... of those 2252 are deaths. Of those death totals (which include the bad guys killed), almost 80% are single shooting deaths. 15% are 2 person deaths, and 2.5% are 3 person deaths. The 4, 5, 6 and 7 deaths total a little less that 2.5% ( 55 total), again including the bad guys.

There is a lot of good info in, "Guns and Control" by Guy Smith. From that book, I had already learned that they throw suicides into gun violence stats... but those are always the vast majority of deaths. And he points out using stats from other countries, that gun limiting laws does not reduce the suicides, since those people just pick the easiest way available. And I saw that there are different ways to count how many people qualify as "mass"... and that the definition changed at some point

I guess I should be surprised anymore when government or the media "shape" the numbers to match their story... but it still pisses me off when I catch them... because if I can catch them, then they are pretty dam easy to catch so why aren't the "reporters" catching them.

Just another example of you cant simply trust what they tell you. You gotta do your own research. so... why do we need them?

@andy_starr yeah. on the first day of my statistics class, the professor said that we would probably not really learn how to perform detailed research data statistics... but we would learn that a good statistician can provide any outcome requested given the dataset. So don't trust other people's statistics.

@BobB Reminds me it's been a while since I last checked on this site. https://waronguns.com/I remember Mike Vanderboegh occasionally mentioning them in his blog before he passed, and I want to say it was David Codrea, among others, who wrote some great pieces breaking down manipulated states like you mentioned and more.
