Anyone have suggestions for good whodunnit books or movies? But no comedies. I've been trying to find a good movie to watch in that genre, and figured it should be easy cause it's very tropy, but it's pretty hard! Especially excluding comedies. I've seen Murder on the Orient Express, both versions. So anything else? 😬

@LisbonMuse There are some good television versions of Agatha Christie novels about especially from the BBC but I'm not sure how you would find them. For books I enjoy finding new versions of Sherlock Holmes stories that have been published since the books came out of copyright.

@LisbonMuse A word of advice. In those book series, I would strongly recommend you start from the beginning of the series for each author, because the characters grow, there is a timeline and you follow them where life takes them, and their personal stories also move in that direction, some have characters that appear to help work on a case and come back in a couple of later novels to help on another, etc.

@Chronic-Yonic Thank you for the heads up, I'll definitely do that. I have an author I read who does something similar so I know it's important when an author focuses on that!

@IgnorantHussy I loved Knives Out! It was a good kind of comedy. I haven't seen Death on a Nile but if it's similar to Murder on the Orient Express then I'll enjoy it I'm sure. I love 12 angry men! I just looked up Brick and it looks interesting. Joseph Gordan-Levitt is pretty good usually. I'll give that one a try as well - thank you!

@LisbonMuse I like it when there is a continuity and growth in the main character, don’t you? It adds to the depth and understanding of the character, their motivations, their train of thought, etc.

@Chronic-Yonic Yes I agree! One book just isn't enough for most characters and in a book series it puts them in different situations where you see how they handle all sides. Which, like you said, adds more understanding and depth to the character. People are complicated and we go through a lot on our lives, so we're seeing that through someone else and it makes it more realistic and relatable. I know some of my favorite characters in book series have helped shaped me and given me new perspectives.

@LisbonMuse Brother Cadfael series by Ellis Peters. She also wrote other mysteries under her own name, Edith Pargeter, but they're out of print and even harder to find than the Brother Cadfael stuff. I think BBC did some TV series based on the books.

@LisbonMuse @DoctorDee It's great, the shorter episodes are tighter plot wise, some of the 2 hour ones drag a bit. But some notable guest stars and Falk was born play the part. UK Amazon has the lot with ads, so I imagine it shouldn't be too hard to find in the US either. I also read an article about Falk's glass eye and how his performance and scene settings were affected and tailored to accommodate it. Like watching it anew once you watch with that in mind.

@CrustyB @IgnorantHussy @LisbonMuse Branagh was actually called out over the racial inaccuracies in his movie Belfast and claimed that he was simply told that funding wouldn't be available unless he included other races, despite the historical inaccuracies. So it probably isn't him making the decisions. I've seen his version of Death on the Nile and it's fine, the casting doesn't have that much impact other than the fact Gal Godot is quite poor.

@PennyLope @LisbonMuse Years ago I read someone arguing that Columbo was a better detective than Sherlock Holmes, so ended up watching almost every episode. Fascinating window into that culture...everyone drinks all the time, and anyone shown going to bed takes a pill first.
