Welcome, new people! I'm so glad you're here.I wrote a blog post to help people get started on Mastodon, and the second half will help you get more out of the site.Since there's no algorithm here, you have to follow a lot of people to populate your feed, and it helps to use hashtags. It takes a little while to get going, but this is now my favorite social media site. It's worth the bit of effort!http://behindthegrammar.com/2023/01/how-to-get-started-with-mastodon/#TwitterMigration #BirdSite

@grammargirlYou *can* afford to be selective in following *if* you hang out on the local or federated timeline to find new people, however, for that these days, you *must* have a good blocklist.

@dheadshot Ah, good point.I prefer to curate my own feed, but I have also discovered some great new people on the Home feed for my instance, especially when I was first here and building my lists.

@grammargirlI curate my feed from people I discover on the local and federated timelines. (It was how I found you back in the day)

@grammargirl This is a great explainer that people new to Mastodon will definitely benefit from seeing.

@grammargirl This is all great advice. I will just add that some servers (or at least the one that I'm on: universeodon) have more advanced search. It is possible on Mastodon! https://universeodon.com/@wire@blog.universeodon.com/109886754146696157

@grammargirl you could also simply follow hashtags of your interest and not follow anyone at all and still have a well populated feed

@grammargirl Hi, I'm relatively new to Mastodon but I do know a little bit about the whole server thing. Why can't I see anyone you follow or who follows you? Even going to your specific server yields no result?Normally I can discover more people by surfing around. Am I being stupid and missing something? 😄

@grammargirl I love the audio alerts, they should never be turn off! The best part of Mastodon. :blob_smile_sweat2: (Also, they help the blind people)

@grammargirl I was with mastodon.lol which is closing down in May. I can’t transfer that account to this one. I’ve had to step up a whole new account. I can’t transfer my twitter to here either as musk has put a stop to it

@marcpaters0n Hmm. I have been able to see who people are following by looking at their profiles on their home server. (I do this by clicking the 3-dot menu on the lower right of a post in the advanced web interface, choosing "open original page," and then clicking on the username.)Maybe different servers handle it differently or there are privacy settings people can enable?Maybe @feditips has a better answer!

@Paula19 My understanding is that you can transfer your followers to a new account but not your posts (but that there may be some work-arounds to help you repost things you want to keep). Maybe @feditips has more help. It's a bummer about Twitter blocking access to the tools that let you find your followers here. I've updated my blog post to note that those tools no longer work.
