"By being on GitHub, we reduce friction from the contribution process and we maximize the ability for others to join in and help. We lower the bar. This is good for us."There have been many criticism towards GitHub on the Fediverse (#GiveUpGitHub). Some even say it's the "Twitter of hosting code". While I understand the rationale, I disagree. Been using GitHub for over a decade now and have hundreds of repositories there. Without GitHub it would be amazingly difficult to manage. I use for-profit products by Microsoft, can you imagine some of them have their place in the world?I can quit Twitter, Facebook, etc. and self-host almost anything, but not my and the firm's code. Why?Read: "What if GitHub is the devil?", an article by @bagder https://daniel.haxx.se/blog/2021/01/28/what-if-github-is-the-devil/ #OpenSource #GitHub

@rolle @bagder You disagree with what exactly? That there are no viable alternatives to a walled garden whose owners abuse those who use it? Who have no respect for their work and intellectual property rights?Because there are plenty of alternatives that people use every day.https://GiveUpGitHub.org/https://mako.cc/writing/hill-free_tools.html#GiveUpGitHub #UserRights #SurveillanceCapitalism #OpenSource

@rolle @bagder I have couple of very small open source projects that I have not put on github. Once I got good suggestions and feedback from a developer that was clearly more experienced than me on the UI library I was using in one of the projects. He wrote that he could even contribute to the code. But there was a showstopper. It was not on github. So he couldn't make a pull request. So no contribution. There seem to be developers who have a mental vendor lock in with github.

@downey I disagree the notion of GitHub being the "Twitter of code". While saying this, I realize it is not self-hosted, it's not FOSS, it's not open source by itself, it's owned by Microsoft etc. My point however is that being for-profit and propiertary is not always completely evil. I'm saying this as a business owner. You can always use ungoogled-chrome, VSCodium, Codeberg, etc. but it is not always wise. There are alternatives, but they are not always worth it, not to mention as good as commercial products.@bagder

@rolle @bagder Why do you think the alternatives aren't always worth it?People should stick with their abuser because it's convenient?

@downey If one is abused, the alternative is always worth it. However I don't feel that way with GitHub. @bagder

@m I get it, believe me I do. In a sense I've sold my soul and realize our code is circulating the earth. But for me it's sufficient that it's not directly to be seen from the standpoint of non-technical people. 90% of the code of our company is for the world to see anyway, with free "use how you please" licenses. I understand Copilot etc. are problem for many, but not for us.I use the services by Google and Microsoft, but I also don't use Twitter or Facebook and have chosen to use Mastodon and Linux as my daily drivers. And I have Apple products too.As with substances, I'm 100% sober and don't consume alcohol, but I still like my caffine. If I'd stop drinking coffee or consuming some sugar I would lose my will to live. What matters is awareness.I could go full vegan, full FLOSS, but I should not. There must be some vice to be happy.@bagder

@rolle walled gardens are bad and everyone whos using it encourage there business model despite there are alternativs to use, it's that simple. It's a difference when using a Plattform is a necessary evil because of you being an employee OR if you are free to choose and decided not to use an open platform. @bagder

@kranzkrone It's not actually the same with GitHub. It's more of a "choose to exist or not" type of situation here. Also, the tools by Microsoft are really useful and if Microsoft suddenly vanishes from the earth (which I doubt), there are alternatives for sure, like you said.Yes, I can give up on all the joys and vice in life right now, but what kind of life is that...?@bagder

@rolle @downey @bagderIt doesnt matter who owns it or if it's open source. The one critical factor is "does it have an open protocol?" Does it interact with other services? Are developers free to choose, yet still be part of it?Closed centralised networks all stop caring and improving. Open networks see services improve as users switch to preferred ones yet remaining connected. Closed networks cause people to nag others to join, like they do on Facebook. Is this what we are seeing here?

@kranzkrone I'm sure I will not. I'm self-aware. I use Apple and Microsoft products, but also a Linux as my daily driver. The point is, there might be a time in the future to abandon ship. The time is not nigh for me. I have been managing well for the past couple of decades with the setup that I have. Meta and Twitter are in the past. GitHub not just yet.@bagder

@rolle @bagder Monarchy is a bad regime. Not because the king is evil, but rather due to the fact that in the monarch-vassal social relationship, the first has total power and control over the second. Our current monarch may be a benevolent one (that's rare and in any case he will probably abuse his power). The argument "we can always switch to another monarch" does not sound convincing enough to me.#github #GiveUpGitHub
