Seriously disliking the new #Google #Gmail "floating" formatting bar. It's making the constrained view one gets of the message being currently composed even more constrained. Definitely want a way to turn this off!

@lauren I wonder if this is something they're slowly rolling out? I'm not seeing anything different (on my edu gmail account, at least).

@mattblaze These things usually roll out gradually. The formatting bar now floats over the lower part of the compose area, reducing its already constrained text area.

@mattblaze It's especially noticeable on replies when you're working with the original message text as well.

@mattblaze I can't recall seeing anything like this before. Note how the top formatting bar is floating over the lower part of the original message. It stays there as you scroll up and down.

@lauren Haven't seen it yet on Google Workspace but it will probably show up...Meanwhile, I cope with the Emacs frontend to Notmuch and the excellenthttp://lieer.gaute.vetsj.com/which syncs messages and tags in both directions.

@lauren Yeah, definitely not rolled out everywhere yet - you're one of the lucky winners!

@lauren You can turn it off by clicking on the A with thick line underneath in the bottom-most toolbar .. unless you mean turn it off as in get it to never pop up?

@athena OK, yeah. I looked under the ellipsis but didn't try that. I would much prefer a way to turn it off entirely, but that's better than nothing. Thanks.

It turns out that this annoying feature (which is apparently gradually rolling out, not everyone can see it yet) can be disabled on a message by message basis by clicking the "A" with the underbar in the lower static formatting panel. This causes the floating panel above to toggle off. A setting to do this permanently would be preferable, but this is better than nothing.

@lauren Am I missing something? When you are composing a message and you click the underscored-A, the edit controls bar opens up and floats over the text. When you click the underscored-A again, the editing controls bar goes away. It has always worked this way. What has changed? (Sorry if the answer is obvious in another post. The ones I found did not explain more.)

@lauren Yeah, I've got it, too. Wish there was a button for "no formatting". Instead, you have to go down to the 3-dot menu, and select "plain text".

@billjanssen Clicking the A with underbar also toggles the floating panel, it turns out.

@lauren @athena Gmail is kind of rudderless now. I dread the day they try to “fix” Google Calendar. Apple is just as bad at “fixing” old software. Maybe worse.

@stevegayner Different people are seeing different things. I don't normally create html emails. At a minimum the default was changed. That is, the floating panel is now appearing for all email compositions when I never saw it before. I can toggle it off with A/underbar, but on the other hand I've never toggled it on in the first place.
