The problem with that is the Dirlewang gang was never a "vanguard" and were always in rear areas fighting franc-tireurs and when they were put on the front line at the end of the war they were crushed. Dirlewanger was kicked out of the NSDAP and spent years in Dachau before the Spanish Civil War because he was an alcoholic kidfucker.

I remember researching him and being very disappointed at what I found.I guess it's a similar idea that the Wagner group is using now by recruiting from prison and to a lesser extent our own military when they waived some of the misdemeanors and I think even some felonies if they were non-violent when Bush needed troops for the surge. It also might explain some of the war crimes the Russians have done...but then how do you explain the war crimes the ukrainians have done? Someone on Fedi who is part slavic said that slavs are just cruel people and I'm starting to think he was right about that since Europeans don't tend to fight wars that way. The Germans in WW2 treated their POWs the best and Britain and the USA supposedly treated German POWs decent too.There is a spirit that many "fighting men" have which causes many of them to take risks in other areas of life but some of the stuff they do shouldn't be overlooked. They also shouldn't be so stupid to think they can attract high quality men with upstanding morals who would also fight hard for what little they pay troops.What I think would hurt even worse is knowing that in the case of present day USA, and 20 years ago too for that matter, you're fighting for a cause that isn't going to benefit you one bit and you also will not be taken care of very well once you get home since the VA sucks and they don't fund it nearly as well as they should have.I don't know how Nazi Germany treated their veterans wounded veterans but I'd assume it was a hell of a lot better than the US does considered Germans would be shunned for not giving to charities during Nazi rule.
