I'm leaving London today on the long trek back to Malaga. I get that it is hard to see things deteriorating when you're living in the middle of it. But, my god, take my word for it, things have really gotten so much worse in the last 5 years since my last visit. It was bad before, but now it's just so grim. You don't need to live like this. Get rid of those Tories.

There are, undoubtedly, globally experienced problems that will trouble you no matter where you live, but I perceive a shift in the UK that has a particularly sadistic bent to it as it pertains to anyone who isn't very wealthy, anyone who doesn't fit seamlessly into a very rigid, brittle system of identity, employment, health, etc.I'm just going to remind you that... you don't have to live under this pitiless bunch of bastards.

@Remittancegirl When I finally left England for good in 1980 I said I feared Britain and the USA were stumbling towards fascism. My friends said I was delusional. I have never regretted not being delusional more.

@khoji @Remittancegirl so so many countries are struggling with right-wing extremism/nationalist views right now though. Germany, Sweden, France, just to name a few.

@Chimaera @Remittancegirl Yes, but the situation in Britain and the US is particularly grim. Both are most likely to become totalitarian states sooner rather than later.

@khoji @Remittancegirl I’m a native New Yorker and as bad as things are on the US it’s not going to become a totalitarian state. The struggle for democracy in France and Italy has been very real for several decades now. The French are in the street asking for Macron’s head: There have been five republics in the history of France: French First Republic (1792–1804) Since the end of World War II in 1945, Italy has had 69 governments, at an average of one every 1.11 years.

@khoji @Remittancegirl A relative of mine made the same decision at the same time, though not quite in that language.
