Today I found out that 120 top barristers and lawyers of the #UK have jointly agreed to no longer partake in prosecution of #ClimateChange protesters and will also no longer work for #FossilFuel companies.Their declaration will be read outside the Royal Courts of Justice, London, this Wednesday 29th March and I plan to travel there to show my support for them."The first time in legal history that barristers have engaged in a collective act of civil disobedience."https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-65067321

@Oozenet Yes. Here in the UK the government are unwilling to act on behalf of the nation. Barristers and lawyers are now part of growing number of groups and professions who have decided to take matters into their own hands because the state has failed to. The others include teachers, rail workers, civil servants, junior doctors, nurses and ambulance crews. All on strike against government policy. The people of the #UK are rising up and taking charge for the good of society and I'm proud of it.

@eliptic I too am glad it is finally happening. Just a shame things had to get so bad before people stood up. Hoping this happens here soon before we get to that stage. Maybe we can learn from you.

@Oozenet Yeah, I wish it hadn't come to this either. I can't even completely blame the current government. Decisions since the 80s with the purpose of the #economy (or lack thereof) have led to this. Not just for us here in the #UK and Europe but even more so for Americans. The poverty and suffering in what we once thought of as rich nations is staggering. I feel like I see hope in a critical mass of opposition to it now. All of us have to fight for it now though or the opportunity will lost.

@eliptic The government is only an avatar of the electorate. The electorate holds the ultimate responsibility. The opportunity is never lost.

@eliptic Climate seems to be the only area where the majority r taking action. The threat to civilisation is far more diverse & complex. We need to take holistic perspective & specialists must listen/act together. #WeThePeoples need #Unity #Justice. That said Change has to start somewhere & this action is laudable & absolutely worth of support.

@Oozenet @eliptic Government is about people doing their bit, ordinary people in "the back room". It's not about heads of department (ministers, prime or otherwise) we are all deluded if we believe otherwise. 'The people of England deceive themselves when they fancy they are free; they are so, in fact, only during the election of Members of Parliament: for, as soon as a new one is elected, they are again in chains, and are nothing.' Jean-Jacques Rousseau, The Social Contract (1762)

@Herefordrob @eliptic It sounds to me like they are free but they are making spectacularly bad choices about who they elect combined with not holding the elected to account.

@Oozenet @eliptic Sadly I don't believe adversarial party politics as a way out of the mess we're in. It does not promote open dialogue but a following of the party line, thus subsuming the individuals voice. Representative has failed us. We need participative democracy, sortition may be one way.

@Herefordrob Thanks for the link. I'm really hoping for reinvention and innovation in our western democracies. Historically we all have such a strong tradition of it which I want to used to further the cause of 'common' people.

@osma I don't know the details but it's my understanding that there are rules governing lawyers which require them to represent anyone who requires it. The purpose of this is to ensure that nobody is left unrepresented on the basis of personal bias and politics. It will produce instances like this where morality and process are at odds with each other and one has to change to accomodate the other for it to be resolved. People want government policy to change, so it's that which should change.

@elipticWe need to change politics. People don't trust politicians and don't trust the decisions politicians make. Perhaps because those elected to represent us are not like us? Or perhaps because politicians are constrained by powerful vested interests, media conglomerates, party factions and highly ideological party members?https://www.sortitionfoundation.org/citizens_assembly

@eliptic This looks like a really good initiative.Unsurprisongly, that BBC article misrepresents the situation. All the criticism levelled at the barristers seems to be on the basis that they will not represent defendants, whereas their actual stance is that they will not prosecute them. Big difference.

@PaulNickson Yes! The biggest gains in justice and liberty were won by our forebears at the bottom who fought to rise up and claim them. They weren't granted by those already in power out the kindness of their hearts. We have a rich and beautiful democratic tradition which I think we will uphold. We can't give up now :)
