       My wife and I have been talking about how some jobs have these psychological tests as part of the application process, and that those tests weed out neurodivergent folks. She said she has never gotten one of those jobs, because she tends to interpret the questions literally, even if that's not their intent. I honestly think they shouldn't use the tests at all.

       @calculsoberic I worked at an arcade chain years ago that had a question on the application "Why do employees steal?"Their standard was that any answer other than "I don't know" was an admission that they WOULD steal and were therefore unhireable. It was a stated but unwritten rule that they wanted people either smart enough to see the trap or who honestly couldn't imagine stealing from the company.

       @calculsoberic 2 weeks ago I was talking with a friend of mine who is in a leadership position at a co that designs such tests for employers. Although their customers can certainly do their own interpretation of the findings (nudge nudge wink wink - e.g. "don't hire that person because all they're going to do is come up with new ideas and little implementation) the focus on his co's test output is how that person has ADVANTAGES that can be utilized effectively on a team.

       @calculsoberic When i get these tests (luckily not very often) i try to answer them the way that i want them to see me, not the way that i really am. And i think i'm reasonably good at that.It's all quit stupid and useless and at the moments when i could afford it a strong reason to stop applying with that company (the hiring process tends to tell a lot about company culture)

       @mstrmustache @calculsoberic I took a similar test when I applied at a convenience store once. There was a T/F question that was “I have used drugs in the past, but it does not affect my job performance now.”

       @calculsoberic Those tests are not lie detectors though. I'm an INFP, and if, for some absolutely insane reason I wanted to apply for a sales position, I could rehearse and perform for the interview and answer the questions based on what I think they're looking for. I wonder what laws dictate, if anything, around the sharing of that info. Can ABC Test Co share my answers from when I applied to Big Sales Co with "INFP's R Us"? Sort of like that Seinfeld episode with Elaine's medical notes...

       @calculsoberic Based on my experience with HR departments, they are possibly the least able to judge the psychological fitness of others.My first job had me take the MMPI and talk to a psychologist (the psychologist even remarked that the MMPI wasn't designed to do what they used it for). This was mainly a check for undisclosed mental illness because the job involved unescorted access* to a nuclear plant. I didn't really blame them but it also wasn't a casual screening or MBA astrology like Myers-Briggs.*everywhere except the security stations and battery rooms. A room crammed full of lead-acid batteries is not anywhere you want to be probably ever.

       @arclight Suddenly it all makes sense! Yeah, I don't know if there's a way we could change this on a large scale, but I find it interesting that the test doesn't really achieve what it was meant to (probably happens with most standardized tests, I would imagine.)

       @calculsoberic It just seems like a form of hazing, like whiteboard interviews. The psychological tests HR depts typically use have low predictive power; I suspect the main function is intimidation. It implies that if you don't get the job, it's because you're psychologically "broken".

       @calculsoberic i used to reply to the questions these tests posed by giving them what they wanted. usually got the jobs. the most recent time one of these beasts turned up during the application process, i answered honestly...& didn't get any further.
