I had some pain symptoms that, due to heart attack in 2017, I had to go get checked at the hospital. 100% clean bill of health. But as you see, this clean bill came with a bill for roughly $25,000. My insurance company negotiated down to $6000, of which I am liable for $250.This is because I work at the Archive and spiked my health insurance to max to ensure outcomes like this. It is, in many ways, the most important thing the archive does for me in return for what I do for them.

@Rocket @rodneylives So, a financial person comes by at some point to talk with you, mostly make you sign things, so there's lots of choices to make a noise with some of the options.

@rodneylives So I had a situation where I racked a $19k with no insurance. It got knocked down to $9k, then ultimately paid by NY State out of a fund, as I was unemployed at the time. While this is all stupid, I definitely watched the system clunkily work.

@textfiles I'm in Georgia, it seems unlikely there's such a fund here. I'd love to move somewhere else but the expense makes it a chicken-and-egg problem.

Fun fact: CDF OBSERVATION PER HOUR is me being stuck on the Observation Floor for a full day waiting to get in line for the nuclear stress test (where they observe the blood-flow around my heart). So, basically, someone is watching me remotely via hookups and the nurses are stopping by to check. What a hotel!

@rodneylives I mean that in the process of any normal stay, somebody comes and discusses the financial stuff with you or just has you sign away papers. So that's a moment to negotiate as you were mentioning.

@textfiles This might be the only thing I've heard about the American health care system of which I'm envious. I don't think it's normal to get access to your health data like that in Europe. ...though I'm sure for that price it could be arranged.

@textfiles Insurance and hospital pricing; been there seen that; for my wife :) Incredible, and somebody who can't afford the Insurance gets stuck for the whole price :)
