Oven in our range broke a few weeks ago. Ordered a new one that finally showed up. It has a couple of more premium features, like two separate ovens (great for meal prep!) But also WiFi. :) Which. I. Do. Not. Understand.Even worse, "air fry" only works when the WiFi is connected. I might need to figure out if my old 802.11g openwrt router can sit disconnected to anything else and do enough to make air fry work.

@eheisman man I cannot imagine a world where I'd need my oven on wifi.If you're on your way home and want to preheat your oven for a pizza... Maybe?

You'd think so, but you're wrong! They don't allow it! To control the cook you need to walk to it and touch a button, then use your phone. InsaneIt's moderately useful when the oven timer is off and you get a push notification. Sometimes I'm outside on my patio and wouldn't be able to hear it.Mostly useless tech though. I guess it helps that it can sync time over WiFi so you don't have the dreaded 12:00 when the power goes out. A WiFi chip and paying engineers to design this crap must have been cheaper than a battery??? 🧐

This tweet sums up my feelings on appliances that require wifi.

It also boiled 3 qts of water to make pasta for lunch tomorrow in less than 10 minutes.Privacy or quickly boiling water... This is a hard choice.

@feld @eheisman yeah this might be a serious Doctorow-esque hellscape.

I have ONE good idea:A smart garbage disposal. No need for WiFi. But it should have a flow meter on the dishwasher hookup so it turns itself on when the dishwasher dumps its dirty water and food chunks so it doesn't briefly back up into the sink

@feld @frigginglorious @eheisman Want it to turn on when it detects my hand digging out that bottlecap that fell down into it.

Guess we have to embed AI to read an array of sensors and detect hands. Needs internet now to get model updates
