@joel What should former cops do? For one, show some remorse for their crimes and stop doing harm. This means at a minimum to stop hiding information from their victims, and to answer any open questions. Ideally, they'd work to undo the harm to society they did in the past, but at a minimum they should distance themselves from their criminal history. That means not proudly promoting it, and not continuing to do the same things.This person is doing none of that. They are clearly proud of their criminal past, and are almost certainly going to try to establish relations between the Raspberry Pi Foundation and their former collaborators in the police and espionage establishment.There is every reason to assume they are an unreformed police spy, and no reason to believe otherwise, that I've seen. I see nothing taken even slightly out of proportion.

Although, I’m not sure how practical that is. During the GamerGate movement, many people were doxed. Anonymity was absolutely crucial, the more prominent you make yourself, the more likely you are to screw up your OPSEC and get doxed. Anyone who was genuinely interested in the movement, rather than grifting, didn’t want to be high-profile due to fear.I think something like #GamerGate could happen again, provided people understood to not allow individuals to represent or speak for the movement.

I think you'll generally find that a lot of people don't trust cops, and one that specialized in surveillance is even more of a concern, but I'd be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for leaving that profession. That doesn't mean mocking those concerns is a good strategy for dealing with them. You're dealing with a platform where a large portion of the membership is here because they don't want to take snarky abuse from their tech company - read the room!

You play in a lot of different fields, hobbyist, industry, education etc, so not realizing that some people might take issues with it is kind of understandable. What really gets me is the disrespectful and snarky comments to people who point it out.

While this hire may have the best of records and never engaged in anything remotely questionable as a surveillance officer a lot of people ** will ** have issues with this for very good and valid reasons.A complete lack of sensitivity to those concerns with a fillppant and sarcastic attitude is deeply unprofessional and will cause brand damage.I strongly suggest you reconsider how you wish to engage on this and other topics.If you feel you can't engage as I've suggested please let us all know so we can discontinue dealing with you and your company in future.

@simonzerafa @cellularmoose @vegetablegremlin @Raspberry_Pi providing a summary or a list of these concerns would go a long way in educating those of us who are at a loss as to why you would want to cancel a charity organization simply because they hired someone who was employed in law enforcement, especially given that the technology he worked on has gone a long way to protect victims of abuse.
