@p @ins0mniak @PunishedD yeah...I worked in Shallow Alto briefly in 08, and was in the city 03-08, so trust when I say this, I've seen it. People up there generally are either in the upper crust of demons and have extremely nice clothes, and just get out of cars and enter buildings, do functions and get back into another car and leave, or they look completely ridiculous, and have no sense of proper clothing accumen. The tech bros are in the last category. It's the worst version of "new money" I've ever seen with regard to fashion sensibility. and this is coming from a straight male that just appreciates it when people don't look utterly ridiculous. :)

There's those that are inspired by Einstein's "least unnecessary decision-making" wardrobe of all the same outfits, there are those who don't see hacking much different than tinkering or plumbing and wear what will allow them freedom of movement and comfort, there are those that wear branded or designer goods because everyone at work loves the Jordans... I find myself in a place in my life where I'm among the former, but there's a gradient in my wardrobe of inexpensive black tanktops and jeans, to unreasonably expensive tanktops and fine fitted designer jeans, because I can.

The interesting one is located at the intersection of the hood and the college town. I got a high end laserjet that cost like $1000 new, was only 2-3 years old, and only has cosmetic plastic damage but works fine and can do like 50ppm (no duplex tho).Another thrift store had a 13x19 printer. I've printed big photos on it.

With a few exceptions like graphics drivers, all the moving parts (drivers etc.) are things they wrote themselves and that's a lot of the source of their resilience. It's also telling that the limitations of that resilience occur when outside vendors force it (e.g. new LLVM being a hard dependency of Mesa/AMDGPU forcing them to pull in Apache 2.0-licensed LLVM in src/gnu)

@PhenomX6 @ins0mniak @p @PunishedD @lanodan thats cool :) i used to have an 8 color epson printer in the early 2000's i absolutely loved it and used to feed it 13x19 photo paper... really fancy stock, and print out my scanned work on it. i loved the thing.it was always running out of magenta, though. so i just started printing black and whites instead. but getting the colors right was a real piece of work. :) felt like just being back in color processing class in college. we had c41 drum based machines that you'd go and print the enlarger print, using subtractive CMY, although we mostly just used color science and messed with C and Y, it was adding too many dimensions to mess with M, hahaha.. and then we'd go blindly run the print , i say blindly because (color enlarger work is pitch black except for the exposure itself,) then check it against some various color slides held over them after guessing, and then take away 10 points of yellow, or so on, and eventually end up with a nice print. was a lot of fun. really enjoyed that class.anyhow im rambling, but if you ever have any wonderment about printing photos i can likely be of some help there.

If it's 15 lines, there's probably not going to be a bug. So now you've got a thing with no bugs and even if it's ugly when you look inside it, it's a building block, it's a black box function for the next 15-line thing to use. (The more time I have spent writing software, the more "just write 15 lines" seems like an undervalued skill.) So something that's 200, 400, 120,000 lines seems worse to me. There's a lot of stuff that can hide in 120,000 lines: anything that big starts to develop subtleties."Clean" really just means "readable" and "maintains invariants". This is easy to do when something's small enough.

It's convenient because it does a bunch of this stuff for you, but it still does a lot of stuff I didn't ask it to. It's mostly sensible stuff, it's not awful to the extent Debian is or something, but you know.

@errante @netdoll @union One of my issues with Arch is that it shoves everything into pacman, and pacman used to actually exec wget/curl (I think it uses libcurl now, but don't quote me on that), so updating to a new version of openssl used to hose it.
