@ogtechtodon @techprofessor GrapheneOS and CalyxOS are much different. GrapheneOS is a hardened OS with substantial privacy and security improvements:https://grapheneos.org/featuresCalyxOS is not a hardened OS. It substantially reduces security. It recently went 2 months not shipping standard security patches.

@ogtechtodon @techprofessor Compatibility with Android apps on GrapheneOS is also much different. GrapheneOS provides our sandboxed Google Play compatibility layer:https://grapheneos.org/usage#sandboxed-google-playCan run the vast majority of Play Store apps on GrapheneOS, but not CalyxOS with the problematic microG approach.

@ogtechtodon @techprofessor https://blog.privacyguides.org/2022/04/21/grapheneos-or-calyxos/ is a 3rd party article explaining some of the substantial differences between GrapheneOS and CalyxOS. It's a common misconception that they're similar. CalyxOS is far more similar to LineageOS than GrapheneOS. There are many other alternate OSes available.

@ogtechtodon @techprofessor https://privsec.dev/posts/android/choosing-your-android-based-operating-system/ is another article about privacy and security differences between alternative Android-based operating systems. Talks about other alternate operating systems including DivestOS. Unlike most content, these are based on real experience and technical details.

How do you fantasise your new gadget to be bought? If you imagine it to be the latest and greatest with hundreds and hundreds of ‘features’ then perhaps you have fallen prey to the big tech marketing. Even power users don’t use most of these so called features. You should think about your needs, how the new gadget would make a difference in your life and work flow and then make the purchase. There is no fun in buying a high end gadget and moulding yourself to it. It should be rather opposite.

@techprofessor It is kind of funny you post this because I'm actually looking for a new device but looking around and researching for a #privacy type device and #privacy #mobileOS

@ogtechtodon what a coincidence! there was a time in my life when I too have ran behind the latest and the greatest and wasted a lot of money. Now my purchase plan is fixed. I buy a used Pixel phone either budget 'a' series or a 'non pro' version and use it with @GrapheneOS. Its peace of mind!

@techprofessor @GrapheneOS That's what I was thinking about myself getting a #Pixel6a or #Pixel5a and either use #GrapheneOS or #CalyxOS

@ogtechtodon @GrapheneOS I can confirm this is a good plan. Both are good OSes but I would prefer @GrapheneOS. The web installer works amazingly and you can install it even from a phone. No need to have a computer. And with Sandboxed Google Play services can take advantage of the wonderful Google camera. I will also suggest you to setup user profiles and compartmentalize your apps.

@techprofessor @ogtechtodon Google Camera works with only GSF installed so it doesn't require sandboxed Google Play services for most functionality. It could be used before GrapheneOS added the sandboxed Google Play compatibility layer. It does need Play services and AR services for certain features such as augmented reality which should all work fine via sandboxed Google Play. Sandboxed Google Play runs in the same app sandbox with the same permission model so using it doesn't give more access.

@techprofessor @austin @ogtechtodon That's not the same kind of thing as GrapheneOS at all. It doesn't provide basic Android security patches and severely weakens the privacy and security model of the OS. Recommend not unlocking Samsung devices since it permanently cripples them and significantly reduces resale value too. You can't restore them back to how they were by locking again. It burns the warranty bit fuse. Alternate OS can't provide all the basic security features on Samsung devices.

@techprofessor @austin @ogtechtodon See https://docs.samsungknox.com/admin/knox-platform-for-enterprise/faqs/faq-115013562087.htm. Samsung is unfortunately quite hostile towards unlocking and alternate operating systems. They cripple hardware-based security features and other features if you ever unlocked the device. It can never be restored back to how it was originally. It's difficult to properly support their devices and there's no way to provide production releases with all hardware security features working so it's not a good platform for us to target.
